Hey /out/, is there anyone here who lives in a small town closer to nature? I live in a city California and have been wondering what its like to move and live somewhere else (maybe sierra mountains areas)
If you do live in these kinds of areas what kind of work do you do? Are you able to support yourself? Would it be difficult to move and settle in with no contacts? Anything else to add? Thanks for your time.

Just so long as you stay in your own state.

Most people supported themselves through agriculture (especially ranching) and related occupations, construction and natural resources work - government and/or private.

Lots of people do.

Depends on your line of work. If it's something where you deal with people as an occupation, then yeah it can be somewhat difficult. If not, then not really; small towns have technical workers and the like rotate in and out fairly frequently and as long as you're not obnoxious (or law enforcement; there are a lot of people who move away from cities because they really don't like the authorities) then you shouldn't have neighbor problems.

Stay in California. If you can't manage that and end up moving to somewhere else, be prepared for people to hate you for being from California. Also, if you're a darkie and move to somewhere that's really white that might not go over so well with your new neighbors.

Small town on the southwest corner of the Llano Estacado here. Work as a teacher, get summers off, live less than two hours from three national wildlife refuges. If you don't mind a cold semi-arid climate and having to drive two hours to float your canoe it's a good deal. Cost of living is very low as well.

sure there is less to do in town compared to big cities, and for some people there are less work opportunities but I cant complain when my backyard is pic related.

Many people complain there is nothing to do here. No mall, cinema, bars, bowling alley, etc.
Canoeing is kinda big.
Mixture of fast-food/mom & pop restaurants, no fine dining. Handful of grocery/general stores. Many people travel 1hr one way to neighboring county to shop at Walmart.

Dad traveled for work but then quit and started contracting work. Very hard to self-employ. Takes 10+ years to get established. Many people prefer to do business with relatives/family-friends. Dad got reputation as hard-working and reliable (townfolk are slow and lazy). Advertised via word of mouth. Still barely making it. Recession created much competition.

Not much work above min wage. Many commute elsewhere.
Sawmills/Cashiers/Bank Tellers etc.
Sometimes people open consignment/thrift shops/ new restaurants, most only last a few years.

Maybe. Cost of living is low. ~25k is sufficient. Just finished college, will likely move or travel for work.

People are mildly clannish.
Talk often about who's related to who.
Family names are important.
Being an outsider, it takes a while for people to warm up and figure out who you are. Joining a large church helps. Or working with local gossips who know everyone/thing.
See above for small business relations.

Very few black people.
Small school, graduating class of 85 students.
Unemployment is high.
Welfare/Disability leeches are common.
Pill sellers and meth labs are front-page news.
Town desperate for tourism bucks.
Organic farming or ecotourism maybe viable.

I work for the local government here.
Prospects for career growth and the social scene are both pretty limited, but if you're passionate about all things outdoors, it's about as good as it gets. Can't beat being halfway between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks.
Pic related, it's one of my favorite nearby peaks to summit.

Use fees keep roads maintained, trash collected, signage updated, and rangers to limit the hooliganism. I never cry about use fees at a state or national park. To do so would be to beg for welfare. The permitting process also lets rangers know where to look for you if you don't get back on time.

depends where it is. it's fairly common in national parks (where this is) to need a backcountry permit. this isn't so much a tax as it is registering your trip with authorities so they can check that you are appropriately knowledgable and prepared and also so they know where and when to start looking for your corpse.

if the authorities weren't responsible for seach and rescue of the nubs out innabush they wouldn't care, but since they are they want people to go through the permit process first

What's so bad about paying $5 that's going towards park upkeep anyway? If you don't have the money/are unaware, parks are rarely strict and it's really easy to avoid them, but contributing is just a decent thing to do.

What I'm opposed to is 5 dollars every time I come. Or 65 dollars for a season (or 20, or 30....) or 115 for the "ticket" for not having a permit, or the 11.50 for parking near a trail head at a national park. (or the 3.50 one shelter on the AT asks for access to the trail!)

If I paid for every place I go /out/ that asks me to pay, I wouldn't be able to go half the places I do. Most of the places I go are free, mind you- But I live in the tri-state area of Va, Md, and Wv. Why does this matter? Because each state wants their share of your outdoor cash. Fishing permits? Nearly 100 yearly. I think it's some other gross amount for each states WMA's seasonal passes, then the various Fee areas, plus national parks and the lot (15 for Shenandoah! (where skyline drive is!))

I mean shit dude...... I give to conservation charities and do my volunteer time, I feel no remorse skipping an entry fee.

Well it's colder.

I was washing dishes (student) but business got so slow after Christmas that I got laid off until it picks up again. Unless you get a nice steady job hourly gigs are hard to keep during the winter.

With my girlfriend and I we can afford a teeny tiny house, but we turned off our propane heater because it's super expensive. Just using a little space heater next to the couch or bed

If you're a particularly social person (at least in my) small towns have a lot of community events that are put together for arts and their are lots of clubs that mountain bike, ski, etc... If not, you can live here without ever having to get to know anyone, but people might be wary of you. Just be friendly and say hi to the grocers so that you have someone on your side. Depending on how small the town and the weather, people might just spark up conversation on the street.
That being said, gossip gets around fast, don't piss people off unless you have already made some good friends.

I moved up to the Sierras from around Sacramento and the change of pace is really nice. Everything moves slowly, including traffic (some people drive 15 mph down the main road if it isn't busy). If you like the outdoors and like nice people, but not a lot of them, it's a lot of fun. Just make sure you move up either in early spring or Autumn to snag jobs. Kids leaving school after spring, holiday season hiring in fall.
