Whats your setup /out/?

In the market for my first bag and looking for advice. Most of my camping is done in the spring and summer months in the northeast.

If you're not more than a 2-3 season camper I emplore you to embark into the exciting world of cammock hamping! And before you're afraid you need trees and junk there are very reasonable ways to set a netted hammock up as a bivy.

I've hammock camped in december with just a hammock and an Elite 5 in the UK (To be fair, we had quite a mild winter). I think that hammocks done right can be awesome.

Imagine the classic style shelter where you build a sort of tee-pee with just a tree. Now imagine if you could do that with a hammock in the middle (You'd need ideally spaces trees to do it).

Nope, I meant you because you said 2-3 season but I think it can be used for four season if done right. Of course I might be wrong and I will happily defer to someone who is right than be stubborn and go out and die hammocking in the snow.

oooh I getcha. nope makes sense, and yes you are correct. I'm still trying to plan my winter campout (cancelled the last one for various reasons/planning/friends bailed/etc).

With my underquilt and other precautions I expect to be comfy as a clam in like -5ºC

Depends on how thick your underquilt is. If you are who I think you are, then when did you get the underquilt? Is it branded or did you make one yourself like I did (IDK if you saw that thread).

The underquilt is the Snugpak one DD sells. Between that and my two layers of sleeping bag, and the external tarps on top and bottom to stop wind... it might work

Yeah, you are you I thought you were. I know you by your old hammock.

How is the snugpak one? I'd love to try it out against my own some day. I might be investing in a properly sleeping bag (Or maybe even a cheapy one) because I'm not 100% sure the blanket I'm using is actually going to cut it. We'll find out in a few weeks when the weather improves though.

I haven't had a chance to use it! We had a really warm night (low of just under 0ºC) and I was hoping to get out but I cancelled. Right now it's way to fucking cold to even set it up during the day as a test (-10º--20º)

So yeah I've had the underquilt about 2 weeks and haven't set it up yet!. I'm quite curious though, and like you I have no idea how good it's going to be. Gets good reviews but this is new england winter and I might be a little optimistic

my first test is gonna be on my family's property about 20mins walk from the house. that'll be safe enough

In the warmer months I use use a single fleece blanket, don't even bother with a sleeping bag. I take a pad and a fleece jumper with me anyway.

Eno is cheaper. I use it about 50% of the time when hammock camping. If you're in buggy climate you'll want something with an attached bug net.

if you sleep on the diagonal with the right sag and tension you can side sleep. it's one of the things people don't get about hammocks. the right sag allows you to lay just about perfectly flat - not like a banana like people seem to think. that lets you back, side, and possibly even belly sleep!

also their prices include shipping and even though i live in the US and they're in the UK i got it within 20 hours, which is remarkable. so you have to figure the price includes like $50 shipping...

I'm a side sleeper as well but I often find the hammock hugs me enough to spread out my weight. I often just end up sleeping on my back though to be fair.

yes
hammock, attached to trees with some 1" tiedown straps i found for cheap. Sleeping bag. Sleeping pad for bottom insulation in cold weather (cool weather i just use a car sunshade)
tarp over the top for rain
homemade bugnet
