I heard about these lately. (VAER) Some have Ameriquartz movements, which I hear are phenomenally accurate. They use metal parts for what Japanese would use plastic for. They also carry ones with Seiko solar movements. Around $150-300 which is decent for American assembly.

Saw a percentage comparison of "Swiss made" compared to this and it's more domestic than those even.

Jesus it came out in 2007. I thought it was released a few years ago. I tend to be skeptical of movements that’s have less than 10 years of proven field success, so that’s why I said that.

Also I just like Casio products. They are the Toyota of watches. Solar powered, never failed me for a decade.

I have this digital Casio. It was fairly cheap and does its job quite well, alarms, illumination, it has everything and only cost 20€. I honestly do not know what more you could want.

Best /out/ watch is going to depend on your activity. For instance I prefer to spend my time in the outdoors murdering Californian teenagers at the park and mailing coded schizophrenic messages to the police in order to taunt them so Zodiac was the only real choice. If you like hiking and camping G Shocks are nice too though.

garmins are generally pretty long lasting, i used my old one for like 5 years and it still worked fine
the most expensive ones like the one in your image are definitely not worth it, look into forerunners and instincts

The only feature i am interested in is topo maps (and telling time)
From a quick search it would seem this is the cheapest of those i can get that can accept topomaps; so, unfortunately still rather expensive because its bloated with all their bullshit fitness features.
Really wish they would just make a basic gps topo watch..

also more about those AMOLED displays, I think they're vastly overrated. sure, they look nice, but you have to flick your hand in a certain way for the display to turn on which is unreliable and annoying, unless you want to keep it always on and drain the battery much quicker.

found this list, so forerunner 955 indeed does support them. other ones I'd consider on the list are Fenix 7 and Epix gen 2 that I've seen at ~350€ in my relatively expensive country

The solar in 955 is neither the greatest nor a meme, depending on how much you are outside and how sunny it is, it will give you up to a few days of extra battery a week or so
