I live in the South. The worst part about Winter is its unpredictably. If it’s more than a week out, you have no idea what the weather is doing. It could be lows in the 20’s and right above freezing during the day, or highs near 80 with a delightful 60-something at night.

Just a few weeks ago there was a small wave of people starting the AT in late January because of the weather, the presumption being that winter was over and it’s an early spring. The lows were in the upper 40’s/low 50’s. This week they’re in the low 20’s.

I don't understand this mentality. Even when the roads are in terrible shape, I'll still go for a short 3-mile walk on a nature path near my house. I would go insane if I went an entire week without getting some fresh air and outdoor exercise. Writing off four whole months of the year is unthinkable.
Also, I have a personal rule where I always schedule time off from work if the previous two weekends had garbage weather on both days (Saturday and Sunday). I did that last month and will do it again next week if this upcoming weekend's forecast changes for the worst.
