Anyone tried Mayapple/mandrake? The fruit is only edible at a very specific time: when they are turning yellow and are on the verge of falling off. Otherwise, it's poisonous. I've never had the balls to try one, but it would be cool, since here's a plant that very few humans have ever tasted.
