Churning up wet ground into mud causes erosion on a previously hard packed dirt trail. When it dries and then rains again, it will wash away the now loose sediment, often causing channels to form. The trail will get in worse shape over time with this treatment.
Also, when it's muddy, people don't bring the right footwear or are wusses and try to walk around the mud on vegetation on the sides of trails, which often churns up that ground and widens the muddy area.

Any damage you do in mud stays when it turns to dirt. Anyone who live on a dirt road knows wtf I'm talkin about, thats why they grade the road in June lol. Imagine if they just left the mud season ruts?

Seconded. A closed trail means some peace & quiet from retarded hikers who can't navigate around minor hazards that an 8 year old cub scout wouldn't break stride for. Some of my most enjoyable hikes have been on closed trails.

Hiking shoes should always have an all black option. Sometimes when I go hiking I return on the bus and my shoes are completely fucked up with mud. I just want people to not notice it, especially the bus driver.

The purpose of national parks and other federal designations is largely preservation, which is why they don't want people fucking up the ground too much by walking off the trail. They don't want to have to worry about picking up litter either. Same reason why many parks don't allow dogs, it would have a negative effect on the local wildlife. Not to mention it's a huge headache if someone gets injured or lost and they have to send a helicopter in to rescue them. Stuff like BLM generally have fewer regulations, you can largely do whatever you want.

My mountains do and it's muddy in the spring and early summer but trails don't close for it. Maybe they should, erosion is certainly a problem on popular trails but I avoid those.
