Do any of you anons know any good urban exploring (including mines) near or in Knoxville, TN? I want to explore some place, but it seems like this area of the US is very lacking.

I'm willing to drive like 100 miles if need be.

Walker County Georgia is only about 4 hours from Knoxville and it has some cave systems that are beginner friendly and not crowded.

This. They're almost universally full of mold or toxic gas, both of which are invisible. This isn't even mentioning the supports, which depending on how old the mine is might be rotted out and ready to give at any second.

and they're full of shafts and drops and cave-ins and have no alternate exits. anyone with normal functioning survival instinct wouldn't get more than 10 feet into a mine without alarm bells going off

I've explored a good few hundred yards into various abandoned mines. Bring a hard hat and a friend. Space yourselves out 50 yards or so. And go slow

If you run into a gas pocket, then your friends can hold their breath and go grab you. Also learn a bit about mine engineering so you can tell the difference between a reinforced mine tunnel and a death trap mine tunnel.

It's fun but you gotta be careful. If you really want to go big, get a 4 gas detector too.

Look man, I know it's entirely possible to explore abandoned mines with some level of safety. But do you honestly expect random assholes on the internet to do more prep work than grabbing a flashlight and a camera and going into the spooky hole? In general it's a bad idea and I'll speak against it on principle.
