only if you crash them like I do, but i only had to pay 150 dollars for oem replacement parts for my clutch basket and rear brake set.
Still have to replace my clutch lever (40$), but it still works and I can ride it. I might put aftermarket bike levers on it.
If I was to live off my bike, I would have a tarp, knife, tire plug kit, electrical tape, duct tape, tool set (allan wrench, pliers, socket wrench set)

I've been camping on and off as a lifestyle in national forests since 2015. The whole time I've been using a 2009 f150. You can get a lot of places if you don't mind clear coat scratches.

I started out with thru hiking in 2023, I hiked from mexico to canada on the PCT. Then I got off the trail and had maybe $7k in my checking account so I bought a van and did a half ass conversion. Then I got a remote job and traveled the country in that van for about a year. Eventually I settled down in the desert and made a base camp on a few acres. Now I'm gearing up to hit the road again, this time on bicycle.
Having traveled by foot then van, I found that traveling on foot is too slow and traveling by van is too fast. I also found that traveling on foot was more enjoyable because of the physical exercise you get walking 6-8 hours a day. So that got me thinking "how can I travel faster but not too fast and still get that sweet euphoria that exercising gives me?".
I'm excited bros

Depends on the bike. Most "modern" engines (from the 70s or 80s onwards) don't need much maintenance other than oil changes and chain care. Get one with a drive shaft (BMW K series, for example) and you can ride them for several ten thousand km without doing anything other than oil changes.

The problem with touring on bikes, especially off-road, isn't really "maintenance" per say even though it's extremely tedious to change oil/clean air filters as frequently as one should, it's dealing with all the shit that breaks along the way.

Doing it solo is asking to get fucked, doing it solo on a budget is even more retarded.
Actual ADV riding (not going down to the next town over's starbucks) is a rich man's sport. There's a reason Long Way Round had an entire support SUV to carry all of their spares and shit.

All that being said if it's your dream I'd say go for it. I assume you're young and you won't be young forever. Even if you last a year it might be a great opportunity to travel and learn something about yourself. All the best mate.

I'm homeless right now. But live out a tent in very high income area. Donate plasma for money and steal food from grocery stores. Saved up my plasma money bought a used laptop. Have 2 cellphones. My visible wireless payment is 25 a month for unlimited data and Hotspot.

Not gonna lie. Life is really comfy for me. In the process of finding a job now.

This may not for everyone. Where I live is not any homeless people.theres a river and small forest where I sleep in the tent.

Only at night though. During the day im out and about on my bike drinking free soda at McDonald's or going to panera with their free ulinited drink club.

They have coffee!

A rough time. I would highly suggest going south and out west in the US. That way you'll experience less rain and snowy conditions that can fuck up the bike. If you can find some sort of online gig you'll be golden. Out west there a lot of free camping areas too. All BLM land is free in the US but make sure you're aware of the rules as some allow fires while others don't.

Any sort of dual sport or even something like a 50cc scooter will be so easy to maintain you can do it from the road. Don't believe me? Check the video below. He's been 80k and would carry everything necessary for repairs on the side of a road.

You can literally pay pennies to repair a dual sport. I would never change or replace the rubber on my tires for my old van and go through all the setup of taking the rim out, but on my KLX230S it's a breeze and tools are small as well as cheap. I can patch a tube on the road or replace the tube altogether which is a life saver on the trail. The smaller the bike the easier the maintenance becomes.

Hell, I didn't even know subframes were a thing until a few minutes ago. Literally every bike I've ever ridden had a single- or double loop frame.

You've never ridden a bike, have you? Those are the easiest jobs. Adjusting valves is more of a pain (unless the cylinders come out the side, hence my K75 recommendation), and cleaning and lubricating the chain is really annoying, since you need to do it every 200km or so on the trail (which is why drive shafts are really nice). But changing the oil and cleaning the air filter is a matter of 5 min or so.

I ride my dirtbike (an old XT240) a lot, and the only things I've ever broken were a front tube (valve ripped off while driving - should've tightened the nut more) and a clutch lever (unironically 5 min after blowing the tube, I'd managed to bring the bike to a stop, set it on the side stand, went to get my tire spray from the back, and the bike just fell over, as apparently, with the flat font tire, the stand was no longer stable).
Other than that, I haven't had anything break on me in over ten years. If you take care of things, they last.

On my KLX250 getting to the air filter involves taking the saddle bags off, unbolting the side racks, removing the side plastics, and finally taking the top of the airbox off

Now that the air filter is finally accessible, have to actually clean the filter, wait half an hour for the solvent to dry, reoil it, wait 30min for it to dry, and wrangle the oily filter back into place with an annoying ass wing nut that has barely enough clearance for your fingers.

Granted, this could be cut down by using disposable paper filters, but then I'd have to rejet the carb and that's annoying too

On my Yamaha 240, getting to the air filter is a matter of removing a single screw. Then pull of the cover, pull out the filter, shake it until reasonably clean, lubricate it (most of the oil comes off with the dirt), put the filter back in, put screw back in.
It's a matter of 5 min, and since the filter is right where the riders legs go, you'd have to be absolutely retarded o put baggage there.

That's just one scenario. I can think of a whole lot of different, better scenarios. For instance, he could get some pussy and not crash. He could get rained on. He could hit a curb at a gas station, thereby reducing the ludespan of his tire. There are a bunch of scenarios that don't involve crashing and dieing in the middle of nowhere.
