Thoughts on PFAS

I'm thinking about getting a rain jacket for fishing. I have been carrying an umbrella in most circumstances, and when I fish in the rain, I get soaked. Simms offers PFAS and non-PFAS rain jackets. I'm curious if they are really necessary for decent performance during a rain event and over time.

nobody knows yet since the PFAS free stuff is brand new, but considering they only switched because they were forced to through legislation, the safe bet is that PFAS free gear is lower performance

I've yet to see any plastics-based gear that is waterproof without being basically a sheet of solid plastic, PFAS or not.
If you can afford it, get oilskin or waxed cotton.
Also, I'd suggest wearing wool underneath, so you won't get cold even if you get wet.

Buy military surplus Gore-Tex. I've gotten really lucky at thrift stores or bought it a few years ago before people started Jewing the prices.

DWR is dogshit for anything more than a drizzle. Layer properly underneat with a sweat wicking layer as a base.

Gore-Tex pants are kinda retarded unless it is cold as they get too hot. I usually just run a Gore-Tex jacket to keep my core warm and swim trunks w sandals or a light pair of pants if colder. Accept that your lower half will probably be soaked.

This is very true. Gore-tex IMO is a good balance of breathability and resistance to water.

I'm looking for one rain jacket for all seasons. I can layer underneath for colder weather. I'm somewhat concerned about chemicals, since there will be times it will go up against bare skin. I just want something that will work well but isn't overkill.

Wrong, PVC/PU commercial fishing gear with vents or a similar poncho won't wet out and the airflow manages sweat.

The chemicals wash off from the rain and typically run off down into the ground. Nobody is anti-PFAS because of human concerns. they are anti-PFAS because it runs off into the ground and containments the environment forever.

You do realize products like DWR are applied to the outside, right? Even in gore-tex jackets the gore-tex itself is layered inbetween two different layers. At no point in time is the gore-tex directly on your skin unless you have a defective or toren jacket that has delayered

Go check out the Helly Hansen Mandal rain jacket and bib pants. That is what you need in your situation. They are fully waterproof, no strings attached. Many technical fabrics will say they are waterproof but once you squint and read the fine print they say water repellent (not the same as waterproof!) or "waterproof" (for a certain period).

It's safe for you because your outermost layer of clothing never sees any wear or abrasion. I actually go outside and do things and wear out my clothing though, so I would rather not risk it.
