What format do you guys shoot in? I just do JPEG because I am too lazy to process my pics. Am I missing out on superior quality?

My camera is a D5100 Nikon, haven't been out with it yet, but I'd like to know the opinions of other /out/-ists.

Just shoot in raw. It's a couple extra clicks in ps or Lightroom to compress it later if you want. Yes the image quality is better.

I only use film. I prefer to take few well thought out photos and enjoy those. I can understand why people would take digital though for convenience.

Digital is a god send for wildlife. It allows you to blast away on continuous mode and pick the one good frame you got out of the 20 you took over the course of 1.5 seconds.

Makes sense, I usually am using slow lenses & film so can't get shots like that anyway. I don't even have a shutter.

HEIF is really nice. But you aren't going to display finished images in RAW so does it really matter? There's really NO full successor format to JPEG that's widely used like that.

jpeg doesn't need a successor, it's good enough for display, small enough and just works everywhere. For things other than display you use other formats that are designed for those other things.

Former /p/ro here, was a magazine/blog photojournalist and then staff photog for a company. I shoot RAW for most things, not even for straight quality but because you can change white balance and color profiles, and pull sliders a lot further without losing quality in post. The only time I use jpeg is when shooting sports or action where I'm ripping out thousands of shots a day, most cameras have better burst performance in jpeg and it becomes a nightmare to store, transfer, and sort through that many images if they're RAWs.

I like post processing so I shoot raw, but if you like the results you get with jpg don't overthink it. You should spend more time getting exposure and wb right if you want to do this. Learn how to set custom wb and carry a little white card on you all the time.

Oh no, just think how many shekels gookmoot has spent sending my 1.2M image instead of a 900k HEIF

because it's a shit format only iToddlers use

Cool format bro, just take whatever you got and rename it to heif, but make sure to modify the header a little so nothing can open it

I was actually looking at newer high end cameras and a lot of them include ability to store high res HEIC as a selling point. So it isn't just apple.

Either you need the maximum latitude for editing, in which case you want the RAW file, or you want portability to post online and are willing to accept whatever processing the firmware decides to do, which is what JPEGs are for. HEIC is basically the worst of both.
