some of my tips:

cold?
>wear your spare wool socks as mittens
two pairs are very cozy, warm up your hands a bit by moving and squeezing something with them for a minute, and the body heat + trapped heat will do the rest

this isn't wool but about sheepskin which is close enough
cold?
>have two small square sheepskin pads
>have holes with strings in them
>gently tie them around my calves
>perfect closed lower leg warmer shape
warm?
>use the pads as partial ground cover

and for just a sheepskin:
>wrap a sheepskin around your ears and neck and lie down
>super warm and comfy

This is where we differ. I like the feeling of wool against the skin. I like a canvas pillowcase. I literally don't understand people who say (virgin, no less) wool blankets are itchy or harsh. They are super soft, imo.
Plain wool feels good, like a back scratcher, to me.

I wore my Irish wool cardigan to church yesterday evening because it was a little nippy out. Very comfy. It has sentimental value though so I don’t want to wear it /out/ for hard use. Any recommendations for wool sweater brands that don’t cost an arm and a leg that would be good for somewhat hard use outdoor wear?

Good + cheap wool knitwear is hard to find, Anon. Cheapest/best deal I ever found was Uniqlo. Also look at thrift stores and liquidation outlets.
