>>2818093>he's never gone winter camping>he's never hiked for more than a week at a timeI mean, I'll admit I'm a bit of a gearfag. Four exoframes with a total of 11 bags for them by now lol.
But there's simply no way to quickly cover terrain unless you can carry everything you need and don't have to waste time on gathering leaves for a bed or branches for shelter, and in the nothern winter, that means 100-150l easily. Even in summer, if you're going to be up a mountain, you need to be able to carry enough water for the entire night (6-10l in my case - some for rehydrating food, some for washing up, some for drinking) in addition to your gear and enough food for the trip. Also, framed packs are inherently more comfortable than frameless ones. There's a reason every proper military has frames even in assault packs.
For me, with mostly milsurp gear (though to be fair, around half of it is from special forces and a bit better than grunt stuff), pack sizes look something like this:
>day tripcanteen pouch with side pockets, ~ 2l
>summer overnighterAlice medium (well, a Molle-compatible bag, but same size). ~35l.
>winter overnighter or summer long-termAlice large (again, Molle version of it), ~65l
>winter long-termAlice large (again, Molle version, lol) with all the pouches, ~120l.
