How is Wyoming in late May? particularly Grand Teton and the NFs around there in the SW. Will it be good to hike up the slopes or is there going to be an issue with melting snow around that time of year? Thinking about going out there for a week but don't want to waste the time if trails will be shit or closed.

NTA and never been to Yellowstone in the winter... but having lived in Wyoming you could probably still snowshoe in June, yeah. It's going to depend on your elevation too. I know dudes that ski Mammoth in June if they get a good enough snowpack.

This is the big horns in early May. It was cold and wet. Also grizzly are active in Tetons.

depends where exactly, above like 10k feet you'll probably need snowshoes, and there will be annoying pockets of snow well below that too

If you go earlier it's a great time to visit Yellowstone since it won't be as crowded before Memorial Day weekend. Also the waterfalls are in peak flow it's cool

scratch that, kind of. looks high waterfall flow usually starts around mid May and peaks in early June

There will be a lot of snow 7000ft and above. Current snowpack is currenlty around 100% of average for the date and peak run off is first part of June

Some of the campgrounds in YNP and TNP do not open until mid-to-late May, and I am sure some FS campgrounds are similar. It really depends on where specifically you want to go and what you want to do.

Last time I was in Casper we got 3 feet of snow in April 80 mph winds and freezing fog in the same week.

Plan is just to do some additional trails at Grand Teton (I'm okay with snowshoes / spikes/ ice axe if needed). I've been there once before during fall and did Cascade Canyon (partially until a moose cockblocked). Looking maybe also to go down to Pinedale or over to Dubois for a few days as well to hike some of the NF trails or all the way over to Bighorn is an alternative. I'm also not against cutting Teton and just focusing on the NFs instead. Probably leaning more towards late May now (memorial week) or perhaps the week after if it makes sense crowd wise.

the further south/east you go the warmer/drier it will be but you will have fun every where. best to get an early start while the snow is still firm (dending on overnight lows) otherwise you might be post holing in 4ft of corn lol. and where there isnt snow its mud season.

I used to work there. I took this pic in May. I would not go up there by yourself, especially without spikes and an ice axe and the knowledge to use them. Remember they got bull DOGEd this year and rescue could possibly not be likely.

I was thinking about going back to the wind river range this year. specifically the sweetwater trailhead. I went 3 years ago, trying to climb mt nystrom but i under estimated the altitude. I was wondering what mosquito situation is like the 1st week of august. ive just read its like super bad. I went the last week and there were no bugs but it got very cold at night
