I have never used a sleeping bag.

I bring an inflatable airmattress, mattress topper, and two 100% wool blankets. Sleep like a fucking baby.

Do with this information what you will.

I'm debating between a sleeping bag and an inflatable mattress. Kinda annoying that you would then also need to bring a mattress topper. I already have a cotton blanket I like and I guess I could get a second one for winter use. I just plan to go to established campsites.
How do you inflate the mattress? My car has a 12v outlet, can I use that?

I have no qualms with car camping. I car camped steeam side in the shoshone NF a few months ago. There are a view mattresses out there designed for the car 12volt option.

I have no qualms with car camping. But your information is not useful because it does not apply to actual camping. When car camping you could just bring one of those in a box mattresses that folds easy to fit in a car and the parts for a bedframe and just set up a regular bed next to your car if you really wanted.
