For the size they're nice to have just for the peace of mind of being able to make a lot of noise with the least effort. Any of the plastic whistles in the pic are probably fine but I would avoid the aluminum and titanium ones since they often have little plastic pieces that can fall out or aren't set straight. The brass ones are usually all brass and won't fall apart but I would avoid pea whistles like the bottom right since they can stop working if they get too wet or the ball falls out. I have a plastic kayaking whistle in my backpack and have a cheap aliexpress dog whistle on my keychain. It doesn't work well at all as a dog whistle but sounds loud enough as a regular whistle and I just like how it looks on the keychain.

The loudest whistle i've ever heard was a Boatswain's (bo-sun) whistle, you can hear those things in a stadium full of people making noise, out in the wild you could easily hear it half mile away.

Fuck it I'll bite. Got lost in a central mountain range once when I was a teenager, lots of rain the night before, the road was all washed up. Luckily I had a whistle with me, found a group of hikers nearby.
