there are also a variety that's more just like an elastic band, hell, you could even make them yourself with a spool of elastic, velcro, and a bit of sewing thread. basically implementation is, you put it around the sock/ankle, tuck in the bottom of your trouser leg into it.

i used one during my time in the cadets but nowadays i just use one of those red rubber bands (really you can use anything elastic or even anything string-like if you have great knot skills and dont give a shit)
