Big Bend is incredible and there's neat stuff in every direction, as long as you're prepared to travel half a day or more to get there. There's a reason everyone leaves DFW to go on "natural beauty" vacations.
I used to live in northern Nevada and I miss it a lot, as well as the deserts of Arizona/New Mexico. One of the things about DFW that helps is the economy here is good enough that you should have the money to do a few trips to the kinds of places you wish you lived, until you have the professional experience or savings to move there permenently.
