Depends on the weather and what clothing you have, obviously. In most cases, you'd be better off finding a bush or a needle tree and sitting within the shelter it provides.
Covering yourself with branches (that still have leaves or needles on them) makes sense when it's extremely cold, but you should still seek shelter rather than covering yourself out in the open.
Covering yourself with dirt only makes sense in extremely hot weather.

Make a bed of dry leaves and boughs to get yourself as far from ground as possible

I'd just make a fire. A Rudiger roll takes like a minute to get a fire going. Yes, I've used it to make multiple fires with multiple materials, not just ash and cotton. I honestly don't know why people fuck around with fire drills, etc.

If in the desert, sure bury yourself deep in the sand if possible. But the question is retarded. You can make shelters and fire almost anywhere. If the environment is extreme enough to not permit either of those things, it would be too extreme to provide enough "dirt or branches" to make a difference and you wouldn't be able to get into the middle of that environment without bringing alternatives. If you have access to dirt and branches - or just dirt and grass - you can make both fire and shelter with nothing but your bare hands. So the question is retarded to anyone who doesn't have a skill deficiency.
