hiya, thinking about making a robust wandering stick, a third leg if you will.
what dimensions would make it the most ergonomic? been thinking about a height of 170 cm, 4 cm thick. Sounds good?

Thin enough for your fist to close around it, and as tall as you can handle. For forests, one hand's width taller than you is a good rule of thumb, for mountains above the treeline, 1,5 times your size is usually the upper limit.

Also, consider putting a rubber buffer on one side, so you can move silently when you want to. The other side should obviously have a metal point.

How I made mine:
>leave stick to cure
>forget about stick
>find stick a year or three later
>grip in hand, decide mass needs to come off
>reduce height until feels comfy
>reduce thickness till lighter
>make hand area at top
>round top off
>carve insert on bottom to fit copper pipe end on
It's done me many good years of hiking now.
