There's a reason why so many peaks have only first been ascended in modern times: It takes a certain degree of affluence for people to become bored enough to do things that are naturally pointless or detrimental even. People that came before had no time for such nonesense and enough to worry about, even in relatively hospitable conditions at the mountains foot.
