Where I was growing up there weren't a lot of local pools and you couldn't really swim in the natural water because it was dangerous if you couldn't swim (tides and shit). Most people I know couldn't swim; the only reason me and my sister could is because our parents went out of their way to get us lessons. Despite that, I developed ear problems and forgot how to swim because I literally couldn't for like ten years. Learning as an adult is also a pain in the ass; I'm only relearning now because my university offered a class this semester.
Anyway, it's a lot easier than you think, OP. If you relax, your body floats on its own, and it's only a matter of figuring out how to move your arms and legs. Breathing is probably the hardest part (for me, at least). Just remember that it's actually pretty hard to drown unless you freak out and make it happen. As long as you can float and hopefully move, you can't drown.
