Funny enough that happened to me recently.

This April I was backpacking in North Yorkshire moors and was super dehydrated. Used all my water and the next town was 9 miles away.

On the moor found a stream, was happy to finally have water. Filtered like three liters in my dinky old Grayl with an old ass filter.

Drink 1 L before going decide to find a spot to chill out up stream maybe rinse off the grime and wash my clothes. See pic related in the water and realize I just drank dead bird juice water.

Was totally fine, but ditched the water when I got into town.

I filtered from streams with a load of cowshit when I was desperate, a disgusting indian beverage. I was fine. Turns out filters do work. Just don't let the outlet get dirty.

that river is so brown and dirty i would never consider drinking of it anyway.
i take it for granted its dead animals, piss and poo in the water i drink but its safe due to dillution and temperature. there simply aint no bacteria growth in 5c water. hot summer days when the waterways dry up and the water temperature start climbing towards 20c its a different thing.

I used one of those for a 2 night backpacking trip. It worked and i didn't get sick but the flow rate sucks and it seems to clog up fairly quickly if the water has some sediment or vegetation in it.
Once it got partially clogged the flow rate really sucked but it was enough to keep me going.
Water tasted fine from it. But i only drank from a secluded mountain lake that happened to have a grassy shore.
That particular model is a little fussy about what water bottles it will mate with without leaking a bit so test it before going out unlike me

I recommend a pump filter. I used a squeeze filter on my last trip and it was annoying and slow as fuck and you have to backflow every fucking time. get a pump filter like a katadyne or msr, they're heavier but worth it for ease of use.

I once drank the water from a stream in the Alps thinking there literally can’t be anything dead in there. Well, turns out there was a dead crow a little further up. I kind of accepted my fate at that point, but nothing happened to me.

+1 on the filter, but forget about the pump filters unless you're shitting money. Those things cost around 3x what a sawyer mini costs, while having 1/1000th of the lifetime. While you probably won't need the 4 million litres the sawyer is rated for, the 200-500 a katadyn supposedly lasts means you'll most likely have to buy a new one every year, unless you're /in/ like most of the gear queers on here are.

Yeah, though it varies by model. For example, I've got a sawyer mini and a mini squeeze, and the squeeze takes twice as long for some reason.

Are you filtering toilet sludge or something? I backwash around every 5-10 litres, normally, and when I forgot the syringe for it once, went ~25l without washing. Took a little longer, but still worked.

I was on a trip with my buddies and they took some water from a very clear river and some had those basic bitch filters. I even washed my face but didn't drink any. Day later in the evening after another hike everyone that drank from that river got fucking wrecked. Puking from 9pm til 3am, wasted and barely conscious.
Turns out there were literal gypsies bathing and shitting upstream.
Moral of the story: don't drink water near gypsies, or just boil, use heavy duty filters not some basic ones, they're useless.

I awoke in hte middle of the night in my sleeping bag with severe stomach cramps and nearly couldnt make it out of my bag and tent, it was a time crunch, my guts were so weak i knew if i brought my knees to my chest to get out quickly id of arse sprayed in my bag
i managed to break free from the sleeping bag and crawled in pitch black about 10 metres from my tent but I couldnt make it any further and projectile vom shitted
in the morning i awoke bleary and took a look at the scene
some hikers labrodor was lapping it all up
i tried not to laugh in fear of leakage
10/10 would recommend

Filters work great. As an experiment when I was a soldier posted to wainwright alberta I filtered water from puddles with cow patties in em. Didn't get sick.
