I did it, I finally caught a yellowtail from my kayak. It's an absolute beast weigh in at around 52 lb, as well. One of the worker near the beach said it's the biggest he have seen being brought in from a kayak

I then went to an adjacent property to ask for permission to fish, but the neither was the landowner hone nor was there a mailbox, just a gate and security camera signs, so I stuck my letter between some wood. Not a good omen for getting access. I went to a nearby spot and caught a few stocker rainbows. The fight was fun, though.

It definitely move me a bit but not too crazy far. It is mostly a vertical fight. I have to keep gaining line as much as I can so it doesn't stay in the bottom for too long and wrap me up in a kelp. I actually ended up on top of some sort of lobster/crab trap and it was a miracle it didn't wrap me around the trap

The scariest part was the landing. It felt daunting when I finally saw color and realized how big it is. It's my first yellowtail too and it happens to be quite bigger than usual. I gaffed a smaller yellowtail for another guy before from a kayak but never solo. When I finally got it up, all 52 lb of it was thrashing on my lap and it took 3 tries for my spike to hit the brain since the head is so big that I am not sure where the brain is. The body laid on my lap for a while until I move toward an anchored boat and asked those guy help me reposition the fish off my lap toward the bow because I couldn't do it myself because the kayak pedal was in the way as well

Got a late start to my fishing today. Decided to chill at the family cabin until a bit before noon. I intended on going to one spot but ended up at another along the way. I left after a while after finding it to be not so fishable with my rubber boots, so then, I began making my way to my original destination. But I got cramps. The shits were coming on, so I diverted to an isolated fishing area that I thought was nearby. I made it in time and shat in the trees. It really is amazing how flies are drawn to shit, liquid, caramel shit. I left that place because I didn't want to do a 3 mile hike, and so, I found a new creek that looks really fishy. I just caught a sucker, but I plan on returning. Mosquitoes were awful.

only if I am cooking a lot of them at once and want to maximize space without them overlapping too badly. used to just remove head + skin and fry that, ribcage included. was not difficult to take the flesh off the bones when done but ofc bone-in means there are bones. now after i do the whole head + skin rip thing I take a fillet knife to get it off the main skeleton and I have some clippers I use to disconnect the ribcage and shit. end up having just the two fillets no bones and I do fry those whole most of the time. ran out of breading recently so I've actually only been frying them in sea salt + ground pepper + some roasted garlic and peppers spice i had laying around. now that i bought some garlic butter & chives flavored breading ive been having a good time shaking it up in that then frying.

Yep, I'm the same guy. In conditions that consist of high or stained water, I recommend using bead head nymphs, something to get down quickly. Perdigons are the most famous, but I haven't had any luck with them, instead preferring zebra midges, caddis nymphs, scuds, pheasant tails, and leeches (a bit bigger than the others). It's good to have a variety of colors (light, bright, dark), but dark is generally preferred in stained water. The other good category of fly to fish in these conditions are terrestrials. A lot of them get washed into the water. Think beetles, hoppers, and ants. Worms also work well.

One bad cast and the entire furled line and tippet turned into a knot
I loved the idea of these poles for backpack camping but don't think it's for me. I can't get the cast down at all.
From what I've read the oscillating and knotting up is from overcasting but it feels very uncomfortable to do like is suggested

NTA.. Try level line. Dragontail 3.5 is what I use. I never liked furled leaders. And I've never used a kebari fly. I just use regular flies. The cast is pretty simple once you figure it out. If you've used a traditional fly rod, it's just a roll cast. Bring the rod up so it's just behind your ear. You'll see a loop form when you're at the correct back point. Now bring it forward, like you were throwing a paper airplane. Not too gentle, not too forceful, but with a stop where it's going to fly straight and not immediately down. If you can imagine a clock face, the arc is 10 to 2. When you get it right, the line will roll out and land straight. You can drift dry flies or tight line wet flies. I've had lots of success with both. I do have two different line setups for them though. For dry flies, it's level line as long as the rod with 2-3 feet of 4x tippet. For tight lining, It's 1 foot short of the rod length to a 15in section of 0x sighter tippet to a tippet ring and ending in 2-3ft of 4x flouro tippet. It's fun, when I don't feel like bringing one or more of my other fly setups. But very limited when compared to any of my other setups. So I reserve it to small creek fishing only. If I'm fishing anywhere I'll want to make a cast longer than 10ft, I'm bringing a real fly rod. Bow and arrow casts are also easy and useful in situations where you don't have room for a roll cast. You can pendulum swing it too. That's great for getting water that's close to shore. But I'd focus on getting that roll cast down if you have the clearance. Once you have that down, everything else will be easier. And the only time I back cast is to dry off a dry fly. It's otherwise completely unnecessary for tenkara fishing.

Tenkara Jesus here. 4x tippet is generally regarded as too heavy for most tenkara rods. 5x and finer is what you need to make sure you don't break the rod.

Run me through your cast. Try and describe how you're trying to cast. And I'll try and give you pointers based on that.

Perfect. Have you tight line nymphed or only under a float? While you could rig up a float rig on a tenkara rod, I think they're far better suited to tight line/euro/contact nymphing. The long light rod is very sensitive and fish small nymphs like perdigons, pheasant tails, walt's worms and hare's ears very well. The long rod helps reach those hard to reach spots. Not as well as a dedicated trad setup, but very good for such a simple and light setup. While you can run multiple nymphs, don't try it until you've mastered one.

Definitely try out that level line before you write tenkara off completely. It made a huge difference for me. Once you catch your first fish on a fly, you'll be hooked. Tenkara was my gateway drug to trad fly fishing. And learning trad casting greatly helped my tenkara cast. Keep at it anon.

If you can't land a 16-18in trout on a 4x tippet on your tenkara rod, it's not worth whatever you paid for it or a skills issue. I have done it. I was doing it this week. I've posted pictures of my tenkara catches multiple times to this general. I sell fishing equipment for a living. How about you? When was the last time you went /out/ fishing? When was the last time you fished tenkara? I did tenkara on Wednesday, Western on Thursday, and Western after work with my boss's son (good dude) today.

I have not been in a position where I can afford to test rods to find their breaking point. Instead, I defer to people more expert than myself.
On the topic of line diameter, I have absolutely found smaller diameter cast better (conventional rods), fool more fish, and create less drag. I value direct experience above all else, which is not to say that other routes of information are not to be valued. My coworkers, whom I respect, say the same thing and so do the experts. If you think that I'm wrong and that you are better off fishing 50 lb metal leaders for your nymph rig, go ahead.

Is it bad that I sprayed my reel/line spool directly with a water hose on my rods after saltwater fishing? It was my first time saltwater-anything with fishing and I was told I should rinse off everything on the kayak and my rods with freshwater as soon as I got home. Including lures, line guards, etc.

Did I fuck up anything with the gear/mechanics of the reel by spraying it with a nose like that instead of being more careful with it? Is it still too late to maybe undo/lessen any fuck up with like WD-40 or anything?

it's probably fine but you should rinse with a more gentle pressure like shower mode instead of a hard spray. either way, if you're gonna saltwater fish you need to learn how to disassemble reels and maintain/relube them. it's much easier than it seems. most of the time you don't have to even fully break them down as often as just a simple cleaning.. hell, even for freshwater fishing, the difference between a reel that lasts and feels smooth for years vs one that feels like shit after a year or two is down to maintenance and not abusing it improperly.

When I get someone started in tenkara, I tell them that they need 5X tippet, medium tippet rings, and some kind of pliers and cutting option (could be nail clippers). I strongly recommend getting the Frabill Teardrop Floating Trout Net because it is way better and way cheaper than any net made by Simms, Orvis, Fishpond, etc. and getting a magnetic net retractor. While a net isn't necessary, you wouldn't want morons fucking up your fish, would you? I recommend 6 inch NiteIze Gear Ties as a line holder because they work great, better than the ones made for tenkara. Obviously, I also recommend flies. To buy the tenkara rod and level line, customers have to go online. From my store, that person only needs to walk out paying $14. The net, retractor, and gear ties total to $55 iirc.

A Regal on an Ugly Stik is not a problem. The problems with an Ugly Stik are that it isn't sensitive, doesn't cast well, and is now expensive. Anyone wanting to get a relatively cheap rod should get a Lightning Rod; they're great.
You're not birdnesting due to light line. It's because of bad technique. Lighter line is better for casting because it is limper and has a smaller diameter.

I already owned one and like it a lot. This fly line is much better than the one my shop put on the combo for me, and the new leader is better than the old one. My $1,000 Sage is better, but it's not a lot better. If Echo got Sage handles, it would pretty much be game over. Unfortunately, it sounds like Echo is hurting, according to my boss at least. He is alarmed by the huge price increase.

I know a guy who bought one and liked it. I only talked to him in his first months of ownership. This is also the kind of guy who likes Pescador fly rods. YMMV. I don't think a folding kayak would be great if you're trying to sneak on a private lake. They are heavy.

to this day i'm still surprised reel with multiplier gears arn't the default for fly reels, or that there isn't more cheap reels available with a graphite or composite body or something like that, echo does that but they're kind of an exception
i mean for about 65 dollars you can get a spin reel today that will outlive your children granted that you take proper care of it and it will outperform most older reels of it's type, and there are much cheaper options available that still do the job just fine if you compromise on quality

At that point you’re basically talking about the ice fishing inline design, just with fly reel capacity. The other change would be to make it somewhat like a bait runner so you don’t have to pull the full drag to get more line off the reel.

The best baits in my local pond stocked with browns are salmon roe on a carolina rig or minnows on a float set up. I imagine stocked rainbows will act similarly. I think the roe would especially filter out the bass.

So no shit there I was on the lake throwing a grub and a beetle spin when I snagged it on a rock. I managed to get it back and the next throw I snagged it on a rock again, except this time it was a fish and a fucking big one too (freshwater big).

Reeled that bitch in with total shock at the size of that lad’s mouth since this animal was massive compared to the panfish I’ve been getting. I’ll be damned if that bastard didn’t snap the line right as he started to come out of the water. I nearly fell back, my sunglasses flew off behind me, and my animal instinct took over and I smacked that fish with my pole as it shot away. Little doubt in my mind I snagged a cat of some sort and that bitch was FAT. Unbelievable stuff to a novice like me. I fought this bass a few casts later.

Size 16 poison bomb midge. Very easy tie. Basically a zebra midge without the tapered body and an ice dubbing collar added. I saw it on Charlie's favorite flies for October video. It doesn't look like he brushes out the dubbing on his. I brushed mine out a bit.

Used a big chunk of fresh chopped mullet and got a huge bite and hooked on my heavy rod and real pulled so hard must have been the biggest fish I would have ever caught and then my swivel knot gave out

Had a fun time up at my little creek. Cause a couple 9-10in rainbows and matched my best for this creek with another 13in rainbow.

I caught this first guy twice! I got him to the net the first time, but accidentally bumped him right in the jaw with the edge of the net and knocked the fly out of its mouth. I threw the exact same perdigon to him and he gave me a second chance! Got him in the net the second time.

I caught this guy about 100-200 yards upstream of the first two in a nice big pool. My brother in law also pulled a couple nice rainbows out of the same hole. An 11in on a perdigon and a 8in on a hare's ear. This was his first time nymphing, I think he's hooked.

Just moved out to bumfuck nowhere so I could get away from traffic, cluttered suburbs, and just busy areas in general. Big yard. Nothing but rural property around me. No light pollution, never sern the stars like this before... and turns out that this tiny backwoods two lane road is popular for some reason. Its got nonstop vehicles passing by all day. Eevn at 3am. I strongly recommend the St. Croix Premier 4 piece rod. I have caught large pike while small mouth fishing on the Medium weight 6’6” (including a 50 inch musky), but I would recommend the Medium Heavy if you’re a dedicated pike fisherman throwing heavy baits.

Maybe it's just a head thing. I've always considered them the standard and a multipiece as a compromise for portability. The only multipieces i have are pretty inexpensive and old (and only for travel) which has certainly reinforced my previous biases.
Still wary of trying a better travel rod because if i didn't like it then i wouldn't know if it was the rod model or the multipiece aspect of it

My monthly Smitty's fly box arrived today! Two new patterns.

This month's beginner pattern is called an Ice Minnow. Materials in the box include: 20 size 10 streamer hooks, 6/0 Uni thread in red, one pack each of olive and white marabou, one package each of olive and pearl ice dubbing and one pack each of copper and silver brass cone heads. Not included, is lead wire. They say they don't include it because some states prohibit it. Why they don't send lead free wire instead probably comes down to their bottom line. But I have lead wire, so no big deal.

The pattern is very simple. 5 wraps of .25 lead wire, tie in a marabou tail, one tight dubbing noodle to build the profile and a second that gets brushed out at the end. These will go great with my wooly bugger collection.

This was a fun little pattern and will be a nice addition to my euro nymph collection. The provided coq de leon feathers are nice and long. I barely got 1/8th of the way through one tying these 6 and I even messed up twice tying them in and had to go back for another section. This is my first time using the rubber ribbing material. It's very easy to work with. It was also my first time using cdc feathers. They were easy to work with in this application. I'll probably have a chance to try these out tomorrow.

Maybe if I were salt water fishing for large fish I'd consider it. For freshwater I don't think it matters at all, even for catfishing or pikefishing.
That's just my opinion but in terms of "are multipiece rods fine" I think they're equal to a one piece outside the very fringe durability usage that you probably will never run into. You'll definitely break your tip before you snap a rod where the ferrules are.
One piece might be more sensitive but I've haven't noticed. I think modern materials just make most rods so nice. Maybe 30 years ago one pieces were better but now even cheaper rods are using what would've been space age materials back in the day.

Shop guy here. I'm not an early riser. I was looking at fly tying stuff and waders last night and am only now getting ready to head out. I've been wanting new wading gear for a year now. My boots were destroyed months ago.
Anyway, my store has a swap meet twice a year. It's a much loved event. I put my waders in at $200 (a bit less than half MSRP), my 84-B 8 WT at $280, fly line at $35, and a sling pack at $105. These were some good deals. I was walking back to change the price on my sling, and I saw a guy who I thought was this customer who buys fly fishing stuff, so I tell him "Wanna buy a fly rod?" This was the wrong guy. The race wasn't even the same, but this stranger looks up and says yes. We walk over to my rod, and he says he'll buy it after looking at it for a minute. I then sell him some stuff to go with it and give him a good deal on line. This was like walking up to a woman, asking her to give you a blowjob and her getting on her knees right away. The next day, I'm working by myself and got inundated with phone calls and customers. This guy was on hold for a bit, which meant he could have hung up, but when I pick up, he wants to know about waders. I start telling him what we sell, and he then specifies chest waders in an XL. That's what I'm selling in the swap! I misquoted the price over the phone, but he buys them. My boss was not very happy that I was selling my stuff, but the thing is that these sales fell into my lap. Plus, we don't have XL waders at the moment.
Where that leaves me is without waders this morning. I'm going trout fishing today and tomorrow. Water temps and air temps are in the 50's, but I think I can manage. I did buy another pair of waders from [Shit company I'm partnered with], but they fit terribly, and the zipper is shit. Instead, I'm buying Patagonia at full price.

I had a chance to try out >>2843923 and >>2843010 today. The size 12 dwarfs the size 16s I've been tight line nymphing with. It had a lot more lob to it with all of the additional weight. It did a great job getting down fast though. Both did a great job getting down there. Unfortunately I didn't catch anything today. I was only able to get out for about an hour pretty close to sunset. I did get one bite on the tickler, but I pulled it out of it's mouth. Nothing after that but trees....several trees, several times.. But I managed to not lose a fly today, so that's a win. I also managed to hook myself! Got the tickler stuck in a tree above me, tangled up in the leaves, so it was a tugging match, who gives out first, the leaves or my 5x flouro. It was the leaves, and my fly was sent right into my hand which was shielding my face. Thank goodness for super sharp barbless hooks! Aside from the impact and the fact that the fly didn't drop after it, I didn't even feel it stick me. And it was a good 1/8in into my knuckle. Slid right out without pain too! So all in all not too bad. It's looking like rain for the next several days, so it'll be a bit before I get back out to try them out again. I'm sure they'll catch fish, just not today.

The second biggest musky I’ve ever caught (~50 inches) was on 15 lb braided mainline and a 30 lbs fluoro leader, and I fought that fish for over 20 minutes. I’ve lost more lures on wire leaders due to swivel or snap failure.

That said, I was fishing for smallmouth when I caught that fish and my dedicated musky rod has a 12 foot long 100 lb mono shock leader. That leader would ruin the action of a small crank like that fish bit, the musky rod is for 3-12 oz lures that won’t care about 100 lb test line.

It’s about picking a combination that works without excessive risk of lure/fish loss.

30lb is way too light or actively targeting esox and 80 is the minimum. Ive seen guys lose muskies by the fish bitihg through 130lb flouro. Just use steel, 30lb tieable wire from rio is fantastic for smaller presentations. single strand can have kinking issues but is very thin, 43lb wire is like 8lb in diameter.
Shitty swivels and shitty snaps are a problem, though. Invest in good snaps and swivels.

Never heard of the rod brand eurotackle but the it looks and feels nice. It says moderate fast and I'm glad it doesn't feel too whippy. 6.5ft 1 piece should be good for the 'yak

As for what I am going for I like to target walleye but I even start to have issues with Bass this time of year. Usually I use soft plastics during the spring and summer and have decent look. But it seems Everytime the weather gets cold it gets harder

Yes, you can remove the spool with taking the line off, but based on your asking this question, I would recommend that you don't add washers. Virtually no one uses them. To remove the spool, loosen the drag all the way and pull it off

I've been having pretty bad luck at a big fresh water lake in the southern USA. The only thing I'm catching bass on is a plastic worm usually on a texas rig. I've tried crank bait, gizzard shad, rizers and all the other expensive crap locals recommend. Live worms don't seem to get much action either. It is a heavily pressured lake and sometimes it's just fishing boats going around in circles over the same spot which is funny. So I think the fish have seen everything under the sun 20 times over.

I'm thinking I need to get creative. I tried literal candy that looks like fish (Swedish Frish candy) but that didn't do anything and I got a few laughs. I haven't tried corn. I'm not sure what "creative" bait would actually be.

crayfish might be a decent avenue to look up. most fish I clean have hella crackfish in their bellies. at least crayfish-adjacent or reminsicent of crayfish solely because in my experience they tend to be less used. people dont typically roll up with crustaceans (unless they do where you live)

Lakes aren't as easy to fish as they might seem. Big wide open water means you first have to find fish, which means knowing how they move during the seasons. Fishing pressure just makes it even harder. One thing you can do when it comes to lures is downsize. Bass fishermen are usually throwing bigger shit so small lures often get good response from pressured fish. Spinnerbaits are good for covering water in search of fish. I like the smaller ones like the pond magic and such. Certain times of the year are also harder because fish are more dormant and less widespread. Winter is good for the sole reason that 99% of boats are put away and there is less fishing pressure.

Hey anon same poster as above. I’m pretty much solely using a light bubble rig (akin to what you would use for a pistol Pete or dry fly to reel) & a 1/64-3/16 oz jig, e.g. Trout Magnet, Roadrunner, ice jigs, etc. I don’t know the method or name of the rig but I call it the Christmas rig because of the beads above & below the bubble.

I don't typically use a knife while fishing. I do carry a buck bantam pocket knife while /out/ in general. So that is with me. But for fishing itself, it doesn't get used. Nippers to cut line and a pair of forceps to dislodge hooks that are deep in the mouth.

For fileting fish, I use a Victorinox 6in curved boning knife. You could also just use a long, sharp, kitchen knife. If you want a purpose built knife for filleting fish, get a fillet knife. But they are not necessary, nor is filleting. I like cooking smaller panfish and trout whole, bone in. Just gut, scale(I use a spoon or the back of my knife) and remove the head. Dredge in flour seasoned with s&p and pan fry until golden brown and delicious.

Same basic idea in fresh, with the benefit of no line twist, and no bail fuckery. This a tiny ultralight baitcaster sold for ice fishing, on a 5.5' ultralight rod with 6lb braid on it, and I jigged these bass out of 25' of water. This rig affords me no special benefit it's basically just for larping as a deep drop jigger so that 2lb bass put up a bit of a fight. I also just happen to like the feel of a baitcaster more.

Trout are sight feeders and don't sniff around the muddy bottom for food like a catfish or carp, so suspending the worm by inflating it makes it more visible.

In my opinion, I don't think the carolina rig should be actively fished. I think you should leave it out for maybe 10 minutes at a time. Then, you can give it a slow retrieve with some action if you want.

Anyone have any tips for great lakes salmon/steelhead/trout fishing in the tributaries this time of the year?
I see a lot of recommendations to run a fairly long leader from the mainline and then a lighter bumper after that. Is it really necessary? Or will i be ok with a 4 or so ft floro leader attached to the mainline by a swivel?
This will be my first time going up there and targeting salmon
I have eggs and egg sack netting along with a variety of other lures

Yes and no. Cheap baitcasters work fine but they won't feel the best or cast as well. $100 will get you into metal frame models that feel and perform better. Best way is to catch a good sale on one that goes for $100+. Shimano slx, daiwa ca80, daiwa fuego, 13 fishing modus c2, 13 fishing origin c, etc. Plenty of those can regularly be found for under $70

Youll be fine ive caught lake erie steelhead using 30lb high vis braid and a 4 foot leader of 25lb mono and usually whrn im swinging flies i have a 4 foot 14lb mono leader. Dont fish less than 10lb, anyone who says you have to use a 27 foot leader of 3lb flourocarbon is a fudd. Ive seen plenty of otherwise healthy looking fish floating under popular bobber holes and i know some odiot with 2lb flouro spent an hour and a half trying to reel it in, caught it, released it, 'she swam away strong' then died an hour later of exhaustion and stress. If there was damage to the gills there would have been clotted blood in there and fatal disease in fish is seldom subtle, its easy to tell when a fish died of exhaustion. And it cant even be harvested because who knows when it died, its not safe tablefare and died for nothing.

Thanks dude. Is there a certain amount of time that you wait during the run before you try fishing a certain spot? If I'm fishing a spot and not catching anything, how would I know if it's because there are no fish, or if it's because I'm just bad at fishing? I know it sounds stupid and probably just comes from experience, but I imagine this could result in a lot of time just spinning my wheels.

Those fish can cover 20 miles in a day. If you're investogating new spots worry about covering water more than picking apart holes- once you know the juicy spots you can go back and fish every square inch. I usually target them woth flies. I swing flies on a downsized skagit setup 85%+ of the time, then i have a 10 foot 8 weight with a bobber for picking apart juicy stuff. The spin equivalent would be walking and throwing spinners and picking apart juicy stuff with a bobber and jig or eggs.
If a particular rock looks goood to me ill drift my bobber past it ~4-8 (half on the near side half on the far side) times before i decide either no ones home or they're at least not going to answer the door and move on. There are guys who will camp a juicy hole from 3am and spend all day there drifting bobbers because they have to floss 20 fish fir social media or their dick will shrivel up and their wife will leave them, and theyre not worth dealing with, i think its more fun to go find an active fish and get smacked, even if that means i have a 1 or 2 fish day.

Awesome, thanks for your insight and beauty fish. I hooked one at the river mouth a couple weeks back floating a roe bag, but it shook the hook off after I accidentally gave it a bit of slack. I have a centerpin set up. Been hesitant to explore up river because it's so low. Rain's picking up this week so I'm hoping I'll be able to explore and catch my first. This fall is also my first season trying to target these fish.

Yeah im watching the weather like "rain god damn it rain" there was skme this weekend and one river bumped up enough to be fishable but i found out after i got to work so i guess im gonna miss that. Depends on the line but a 2500 should be plenty of reel if its got a decent drag. Usually for spin gear im running my diawa bg 2500 on a 7 foot medium light fiberglass rod with 20lb braid to 14lb leader or an 8'6" medium light glass rod with 15lb braid and 12lb leader on a 1500 size diawa bg

It's an inland freshwater lake, not very large (like 80 acres big) but its the last stop in a very large watershed so there is decent flow through one portion of it. Simply put, max depth is like 13ft at the middle of the sandy "bowl" of the lake with it gradually going from 12ft-7ft where it starts turning into a very weedy area from 7ft to the shoreline.

My town was at one point super bad for the polution shit too. It was like 50+ yrs ago and we've apparently done a lot of remediation + I think I got lucky with my lake being kinda small so even back then they thought maybe we shouldnt dump the nastiest of our nasties at this one in particular. idk, government fish guide says for my lake 30 fish meals which appears to be like either 2 fillets of a smol fish or 1 of a pretty decent fish is appropriate. if my doctor ever says "you fucked up because you ate too much delicious fish you caught yourself now you are going to die" then I'll just fucking have to deal with it.

These are the fillets from another guy I got like 20 minutes ago. Firmness is as you'd expect for the species, not mushy. Little to no smell to the fillets themselves even when put right up against your nostrils. Color is consistently red on the outer flanks (apparently part of the fish glue that holds their skin on or something) and a paleish pink/cloudy white on the inside depending on how well I process them. They nearly all are infested by those lil yellow dots that are some sort of parasite that we don't have to worry about. I know the cysts disappear completely after cooking.

I have never experienced a "muddy" taste or I like the taste of mud? I find them very palatable while being easy and fun to catch.

well all animals over time will accumulate heavy metals and some chemicals, some are better at doing it including catfishes
we have a debate about that in france on the silure our local giant catfish and if it's suitable for food or not
in your case the catfishes you posted recently look fairly small so i'd say you're safe if you're sure your lake is clean
i don't know how you could get the meat tested but i know it's possible

Working on connecting with someone from my local university/lake center to have entire fillets tested (prolly sum organs too) otherwise I don't think I'd ever be able to say I'm sure it's clean. I do my best to remove blood from the fisll plus as much belly fat as possible.

well on that it might just be genetics actually, there was this study with them about tabaco and cancer, and turn out japanese have a lot less issue than everyone else despite being heavy smokers in general leading to the theory that smoking would be an aggravating factor and not the actual cause or something like that
don't take my word on it i just vaguely remember reading about it
well anyway, the dose make the poison more than the product, so unless you where eating catfish every other day for decades you should be fine regardless
