Let's get a fly fishing thread going.

I'm just sitting here waiting for the ice to melt. I'm about to buy a lighter rod, I use a #7/8 but it's too heavy. What weight should I get for small bass? #5?

You tie a fly on the end of some leader. You cast it out. You retrieve it with your hands and if a fish takes it you strike. Then you can either pull the fish in using the line or get the line onto the reel and use that.

For largemouth bass I use big ass poppers. I need the weight of a #8 line to cast those bastards out. I bought a Reddington Cross Water combo just for largemouth. Got it for around $130. Its a nice moderate action setup.

i use my 7'6" 3 weight more than anything. easy to cast in close quarters, easy to hike with, and ive caught fish over 6lbs on it.

pissed i more out of oregon. southern california isnt very conducive to my hobbies.

7/8 will work, but a 5 is a great go to freshwater rod. i have a 5 i use for mostly trout and some bass, but im prob gonna get a 2 or 3. my brother has the same model as mine in a 3 and it feels like a feather compared to the 5. even with a 3 you should be able to land bass, however, it will be harder to cast bigger bass bugs and shit with a rod that light.

A 5 wt would be great for small bass. 5 or 6 are probably the best all around weights for freshwater, but on lakes I normally use my #8 for just about any species. Just for the casting power.

It was fun doing it in Alaska... till I realized I could literally stick my hands in the water and pull out fish with my bare hands if I wanted to. They were back up stream to die.. and would just bite on bugs that would agravate them.. most were caught by snagging them.

Hey fishermen, I've got the dumbest question to ask.

What do you do with the fish after fishing them out of the water?
I mean, how do you kill them?
Do you just put them in an empty bucket and wait for them to "drown"?
Do you whack them on the head with a rock?

Sorry, I've never went fishing really and have always wondered about that.

I always catch and release trout. Always. With Northerns, panfish and walleye I cut the gills open. This kills them quick and drains a lot of blood, getting rid of some of the fishy taste.

I have a Vision GT #6 that I fucking love. Got it from my brother. Has a great feel with smaller fish (1kg or below) and with bigger ones too. As it not that rigid, you have to have a good technique for drilling (don't know what it's called in english) the fish, but you get that great nice arch when you have a bigger fish on the line.

Damn, I wanna go fishuru. My home town is relatively close to Swedens best fishing waters, but I currently live down south, and I have no clue where to go fish here.. ;_-;

Unless you're really dialed in on a spot, they're pretty easy to avoid. He's always an old timer and/or overweight and is not moving for a while after he settles in. I usually stay pretty mobile when shore fishing so I just exchange a quick pleasantry, maybe ask him how he's doing, and move on. Some of those guys know a trick or two, never hurts to say hi.

It sounds like you're losing casting power at some point in the cast. I have a couple theories:

1) You're bringing the rod tip down too low on either your front or back cast.
2) You are making long casts, but not adding power as you shoot more line.
3) You aren't letting the line play out enough before bringing it forward/backward again.
4) You're leader might simply be too short. Have you cut a lot off? Like down beyond the tippet?

Hopefully one of these rings a bell! And as far as not catching any fish goes, welcome to fly fishing!

What aspects of line and leader selection are you wondering about? Obviously, a 5 wt rod takes 5 wt line. Leader selection doesn't really matter all that much.

Stick the blade in here until it comes out the other end, then cut downwards all the way through. It dies instantly and the blood drains nicely. This has the added benefit of keeping the fish fresher-tasting for a longer time.
Unlike in the photo, I use an Opinel knife for this.

Reading your post is reinforcing my believe that I am very lucky to have mostly only fished in remote and fairly inaccessible places. There I don't have to worry about anyone coming up behind me and talking, or someone and their dog jumping in the water.

I don't think I'd be interested in fishing in such busy places. God dammit, let's not ruin this whole planet with our "development".

Even if you live in the dead center of Ottowa, theres gotta be a few decent rivers within a reasonable drive right? Hell, I'm in a NJ suburb of NYC and have no less than 4 or 5 legit trout rivers (well as legit as this part of the northeast allows) and 20 small streams within 45min to an hour of me. Theyre not crowded either, unless you go opening day.

I started with a cheap $20 rod reel combo from big 5. Practiced casting on grass at a park before I deiced to invest in a good rod and reel.

Only ever landed one small trout in a lake out of the 3 times Ive gone.

Ive even tried to tie my own flys lol.

I started tying last winter and caught a lot of fish the past yr on my flies, and looking back on them they looked awful compared to how i can tie now. you'll get better, but they work pretty much either way, and its a fun hobby.

Apparently there is a big river 4 hours away in Oklahoma with 20" rainbows and browns, though that fishery is supposedly really pressured in late Spring - late Summer.

I really want to try steelhead/salmon fishing some time though. I have an inexpensive cabelas 6 weight atm that works for bass (pic related) but was thinking about getting a heavier weight rod for larger bass, steelhead, and salmon. Yeah my first few ones looked terrible I just used em to practice casting. Cut the hook part flat.

The think i still dont seem to grasp ( bare with me) once I cast after that I always dont know what to do. Let it go witht he flow, etc...dunno. Ive fished bass before and got taught for that. I love the idea of fishing but I sure as hell only know little.

That rod should do the trick in most steelhead situations. A similar rod is the Redington Pursuit. I have it in a 9ft 8 wt and at $100 it is the supreme value in fly rods IMO.

Any rod should work in saltwater as long as you clean it. My understanding is that the only defining characteristic of saltwater oriented rods is non corroding guides like titanium or a similar material that won't rust, so you should be able to just clean regular steel guides and they won't corrode. I think it would be more important to get special saltwater fly line. But I'm a Minnesota fag with no saltwater experience. Chased plenty of Lake Superior chromers though, you should def try steelhead!

It has a pretty good drag system and really a fly reel is pretty much just there to hold line.

The only problem would be use in saltwater. The enamel finish isn't going to hold up to salty shit. I'd look for an anodized aluminum reel for salt. Machined reels are more expensive than cast reels, but only a little bit more durable.

I know.what you mean with the casting. When setting the hook, remember there should be little to no slack in the line, but that shouldn't be the problem if you're using a popper. I assume that you're setting the hook by raising your rod tip. You can also strip in as much line as possible as you're raising the rod. You have to be careful not to snap the tippet, but with a heavier bass tippet that shouldn't be a huge problem. I hope.that helps.

That pic reminds me.of a day I spent at a fishing camp years ago. We would all wade out into the water. When we started it was low and clear and about four feet at the deepest parts. Ok, that's what I was thinking. But after doing a little (more) research on it, it turns out that "speckled trout" is actually East Tennessee (especially around the Smokies) slang for brook trout - so maybe he's from around here and was just meaning it like that.

As for the fly, good eye, it's (some variation) of an ausable wulff. I didn't tie (or buy) that one, it was something my dad gave me a few years ago that he tied. When I was younger, he used to call them "irresistibles," but has since told me the pattern was an ausable wulff, haha.

That will allow you to tie most of the basic flies you need, after that its just buying hooks and other materials you find you want. Tying your own also allows you to tweak your own patterns to make the most successful flies for your particular area. I've had more luck on ugly flies I tied than the beautiful flies I've purchased. It's important to remember that store bought flies are marketed to anglers, not fish.

very true. i have some flies from when i first started, that looking back, look pretty sloppy, but they still caught fish like no other.
and it is true youll find yourself shelling a lot out at the beginning (rooster hackle is especially expensive) but the materials will tie A TON of flies, a good hackle should pretty much last you forever, unless youre extremely productive at the vise. I myself could never justify paying $2-3 a fly ($5 or 6 for big streamers) so i figured the initial investment was worth it.

and in the end, a lot of satisfaction is gained from catching fish on a fly you made yourself.

Went up the Eastern U.P. last summer around the 4th. Fly fished on a couple of smaller trout streams (relative to NW Lower MI) with abundance of mainly brook trout. Area is /out/ as fuck, minimal roads, mostly fire roads and logging roads through jack pine savannahs except where streams and ponds criss cross. Perfect haven for a great camping/fly fishing trip. what size tippet is on your leader? for smb on a popper, use anywhere from 1x to 3x tippet (1x is the strongest, but pretty much any smallie can be landed on 3x or even 4) as for the knot, the regular clinch knot should do fine, just make sure you tie it properly and tighten it well enough.

i use a surgeons knot too, just because a blood knot is a pain in the ass when youre working with lighter line. i have heard that blood knots are better and they have a smaller profile so tangles are less likely, but i just hate tying them

Brookies and browns wont hybridize with Bows. Tigers are usually artificial, but can occur in the wild. They're not viable though.

What does suck is Cuttbows though. Because they will readily hybridize and produce viable offspring leading to one of the coolest sounding things ever that actually totally sucks, a hybrid swarm.

Yeah, they can live in faster water thanks to their rainbow genes. Also, they mostly just breed out the true cutthroats. The Colorado Greenback Cutthroat was considered extinct until a bunch were found in a little stream 5 miles from my house.
