Im sure this question comes up often but...

Hows does /out/ feel about hammocks?

i bought one last year and enjoyed it for the most part but my ass kept getting cold due to a slight wind.
aside from that, the size is perfect and it is oh so comfy...

I love mine. Hennessy A-Sym. I spent 50 consecutive nights in it in summer 2010, with the vast majority of them in the Alaskan backcountry.

With good insulation from underneath I am perfectly comfortable and sleep SO MUCH better than in a tent

i like mine. i got some super cheap one on amazon and it works great. get one of those if your curious about it. if it works for you then buy one that better suits you. i have a military surplus mosquito net i got for next to nothing. any tarp that sheds water will work to keep you dry. super cheap setup that works very well for me. oh and some way to insulate the bottom of the hammock is a must. i stick my sleeping pad in there. its one of those blow up kind.

I've been looking into replacing my shitty old matress/boxspring, and the novelty/comfort of a hammock seems appealing, but I am not quite convinced I wanna toss out my bed just yet.

alright. So I've lofted my bed, and hung the hammock beneath (because it's a small dorm without room for a hammock stand) and I throw all my stuff like books and jackets on the mattress.

sleeping in the hammock was fucking terrible the first night. my legs went to sleep so I face-planted the floor when I rushed to turn off my alarm the next morning. If you set the hammock up with the proper amount of dip and lay diagonally slightly (pic related), you avoid the problem of having your feet elevated and going numb. Laying on your back is pretty natural this way and you feel cradled completely if set up well.

wearing socks, using a blanket, or controlling the heat/ac (something I can't do in a dorm) is essential.

another piece of advice: keep your mattress just in case. sometimes you might get fed up with the way you have to move to enter/exit/get comfortable and just want to plop down without the effort of balancing late at night, in the dark (image being sick or drunk). For me: mattresses make my back hurt, so I choose the floor..but that's me.

If I had a bunch of extra money I'd probably get a hammock for hiking innawoods. However, most of my long-term /out/ings are by bicycle, and I end up camping in places where hanging a hammock would be impossible more often than not.

Sleeping long term in a hammock is great way to end up with all kinds of spinal problems, not to mention circulatory issues.

Growing up if we wanted to avoid being dragged off by hyenas and shit in our sleep we'd make up simple tree beds, old trampoline mats were perfect, but hessian sacks or other mesh works too, cut a rectangular section out, sew the two long edges back on themselves so you could slide a pole in, brace width wise with whatever is handy and string it up.

Supportive, comfortable, an extremely safe place to keep your food whilst you were away from camp and doubled as a perfect stretcher or a means of carrying bulky items.

Pic sorta related, ours were much simpler.

Does it do well with rain? That's my only main concern. I'm ready to pick up a tarp, but I don't know if I should get the 2-pack of 9x9 poly for $4 or the 9x9 camping-specific fly for $59.

im a poorfag and have used regular walmart tarps before as a rain fly. catenary cut a large enough one and tie the ends in knots. can't use regular line to tie them down. gotta use some strong elastic type stuff or else it will stretch over a few hours and get floppy. this works fine for overnight or two hiking trips but i would definitely invest in a sil-nylon one if you plan on being gone for weeks at a time

Being a Britfag, we get a fuck ton of mosquitoes in summer. It has a built in net, and a 150kg weight limit. Also has a double layer base, and you can literally cocoon in it if it rains.

I'm not actually kidding, you would be surprised how quickly your body adapts to being forced to sleep in a certain position.
I will wake up immediately the door of the room I'm sleeping in is opened. It comes down to years of childhood abuse, and is, granted, an extreme example. It's something to do with our instinctive danger functions. It's why some animals can sleep in trees and never fall out.

I'm by no means an avid outdoorsman, My first major camping trip was last year. Slept in a hammock for the first time. I am a Stomach sleeper that tosses and turns, but with the hammock I was able to comfortably sleep on my back and had some of the best sleep I have ever had. Lying diagonal is very important though.

What sort of knots do you guys use to keep the hammock up?

Since I can't into knot tying, I put 2 rappel rings on either side of the hammock through a carabiner and pull on the rope to adjust tension. It never feels right though, so what am I supposed to do?

One thing I noticed was that it's awkward as fuck to get a sleeping bag the right way around after you get in.

BTW chaps, is paracord okay to use to strap it to the trees?

I sleep in an ENO double-nest and have my old single-nest attatched below it to store my pack. One tarp/rain-fly over the top keeps my stuff and myself dry all night.
The only downside is making sure to be insulated on all sides as it can get pretty chilly in cold weather. Other than that, even carrying two is lighter than a tent.

if nobody is familiar with the south coast of ireland except yourself, then you are the most qualified person to answer that question. some hammocks can be set up on the ground as a bivy (DD Jungle Hammock for example) in which case you're good for trees and ground. if southern ireland has a lack of ground you'll need to think of something else

I feel ya bruv, slamming doors, clanking dishes, and hearing yelling in a room below me can jolt me up unless I'm fully asleep.

But on topic, have you/other anons ever successfully slept in trees before? it's been my /out/ pipedream to be able to crawl up a tree every night, but even when I've tried to take light naps I have trouble with it. I think if I regularly slept on uncomfortable surfaces, e.g. the ground, I'd be able to do it better.
