/K/omrades! Don't use your baofengs to talk on 220MHz. It might seem like this is easily doable, but transmitting that far off frequency will fuck up your radio! The explanation is rather technical, so we'll use a /k/ metaphor. Using 220MHz on the baofeng UV-5r is like using 9mm in an AK. The radio is built for only 2m and 70cm. It might work for a bit, but the radio will destroy itself pretty quickly. Receiving should be fine, but keep in mind that it won't be able to receive as efficiently on 220MHz

Go ahead and blast GMRS/murs frequencies on 5 watts all you want, but start fucking with repeaters and you're opening yourself up to legal trouble.

Don't transmit anywhere from 144-148 430-450mhz either. You'll be in for a bad time.

It sure is. But nevertheless ham operators can not transmit on GMRS repeaters, or GMRS-only channels for that matter. GMRS licenses are different. And most people on here aren't going to get a license anyway, they'll just be malicious interferers. I wish they would get a license though.

GMRS and amateur radio are licensed services. You need to have an FCC license to transmit on them. Baofengers have been causing interference on our repeaters because you can get them for $30 and program the repeaters in. People posting guides on "survival" websites are a huge part of the problem.

Go ahead and get a baofeng, program it for murs, frs, and GMRS. Nobody will give a fuck. Don't program it for GMRS repeaters or any ham frequencies, people will give a fuck and if you interfere long enough you will get caught.

Stick to murs and frs/GMRS simplex and you will be fine.

Right on, my wife and I are currently in Idaho and she has family in Canada and we wanted to see what type of range was possible to speak with them incase anything should happen or if we can't reach them, emergencies and such. what would you suggest?

I've never done it with a baofeng specifically, but other radios I've owned I just buy the programming cable ($10-20 amazon) nd download chirp, which is freeware and is known to work with baofeng.

The nice thing about these radios is they'll let you TX on anything they're opened up on, which includes a lot of things that you really shouldn't TX on. Know the band plan, and respect the licenses. These radios can be used on GMRS or MURS frequencies, just know what you're doing before you just start keying up the mic. Wide/narrow deviation, frequency, tones/codes, etc.

For several reasons. Some bands are reserved strictly for use by emergency personnel (police, fire, ambulance). Some bands are reserved for paid services and if you are broadcasting on that band, you will interfere with their signal. If they just let anyone broadcast on whatever band they wanted, then there would be frequent interference and the bands would be unusable.

I'm intersted to see how this will work at my job. On my ship we use VHF radios to communicate with other ships and small boats and we use UHF radios to communicate within the ship. Occasionally we have Navy helos work with us, I imagine they monitor civilian aviation channels in addition to the Navy crypto stuff.

You'll probably need something that does trunking for that. Uniden or GRE do decent stuff. You can use a $20 tv dongle acting as a SDR with some trunking software and get a 90% solution.

It's impossible to have an all frequency radio for that little. The cheapest radio with the biggest useful band is the Yaesu FT-817ND,and those run in the $600 range. The Baofeng covers the useful frequencies for line of site, short distance communications.

Okay, so, my understanding of these radios in the US is that they can broadcast over a lot of shit you shouldn't like EMS and stuff you're not supposed to like ham radio frequencies.

I also understand that it's capable of MURS but the radio itself isn't licensed and might overpower it?

What's the best frequency this radio is capable of using for line of sight without a license?
Regardless of if it's FCC certified, provided it doesn't bleed over or you have the ability to turn the power down to within specs for the band.

OK lets get down to the important bit here. Lets say im out in a national park with a friend and one or both of us becomes immobilized for some reason. What are the odds of us actually being able to call for help with one of these things? Scenario i am envisioning is in the mountains if that makes a difference.

again, they are not type-certified for murs, but at 5 watts nobody is going to bat an eye on that one. If you get caught, it's because someone has a personal vendetta and ratted you out specifically to the FCC, but that's not going to happen if you stick to the MURS bandplan.

I would not think twice about firing that thing up on MURS, or marine VHF for that matter (provided that I'm actually using it onnaboat)

FCC Rules allow you to use ANY and ALL means of communication at your disposal, licensed or not, to call for help in a legitimate life-threatening emergency

That means that if you're alone in the woods with a broken leg, you most certainly CAN jump on a ham repeater and call for help.

Here's how you do it:

Break into the conversation and say "emergency emergency emergency." You then wait for a reply.

Most ham operators only ever dream about getting the chance to use their radios to help rescue somebody.

Also, is there any advantage of these over a good quality set of normal PMR radios, other than listening on frequencies you're not really supposed to be on anyway?

I use a radio for work and the emergency call is exactly that. Someone is going to hear it and your ass is getting rescued.

Those are nice too, Low powered HT's are nice for talking to fellow campers and hikers however. You can also radio in some ham operator for help if you had to, Using their radio to rescue someone is a wet dream of they have.

Depends on what channel, try to have an asinine conversation on 16 and there will be problems (USCG). Although it'll probably be apparent you're not on another boat, as long as you don't need with a reserved/heavily used channel you should be fine.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but it's my understanding that the UV82L had better reception than the UV5R with the regular antenna. Put on a Nagoya (get one for each, definately worth it) and the $25 is well worth it.

Also, it's a bit more functional in it's design.
