I love this. Your kids are lucky. The other day I was walking through a local woodlot near my college, it was almost dark and snowing hard. I saw a couple guys snowshoeing with a young boy following them. It made me think of a time when I was a kid and my dad took me cross country skiing down some logging trail in a snowstorm.

It's so great, I can't really explain it. It's just them feels, man, them feels. Pic related. My kid (orange shirt) and my neighbor's kid (mostly MIA dad, definitely not an /out/ guy) at the top of the trail to the balanced rock at BBNP summer 2013. Neighbor didn't have a hat that wasn't a baseball cap, so I got them those junior ranger bucket hats at the ranger station when I got our permits. It was his first trip to mountains or desert and my kid's first desert trip in a year. Good times. Would've hiked more, but kids can only take so much.

I live in Quebec and, depending on where you go, there will be black bears, wolves, coyotes and moose (among others). Unless I'm going hunting or plan on target shooting, I don't bring any of my guns. It's cliche as fuck, but predators in most places are afraid of you way more than you should be afraid of them. Just your presence is a good deterrent, and a fire and knowledge about how to intimidate them if they get jittery help a lot.

You have no reason to have to bring a gun camping unless you live in hog/cougar/whatever that's really dangerous territory, although I understand people who do. It's just that it's usually unnecessary most of the time if you think about it.

It was actually two coyotes doing call-and-response, and this recording I actually got in my yard, with the closer coyotes moving stealthily around me in the surrounding woods. I usually camp-out in the woods near my house (big enough to camp without being seen or heard, but not exactly a National Park). I had been camping-out a lot that month trying to capture the typical screaming packs of coyotes but never got a good recording (probably spooked them too much with my presence). And then one night I heard this out my bedroom window so I snuck-out with my recorder and captured this. But that's why you hear cars... it's a rural area but not *so* rural. What you're hearing is the main road a mile or two away.

also I am the exact opposite of OP. It takes me forever to get going in the morning, my bivvy is usually unpleasantly warm and humid, and I threaten anybody who talks to me with murder for the first 30-45 minutes or so I am awake. About nine or so years ago I was camping at the Barker wildlife refuge in New Mexico (it borders the big boy scout camp) and got to see a cougar chase a young deer or elk (never was sure what, it was moving fast and I only got a glimpse) across the edge of the valley. The sound the cat made after it got the game was the scariest thing I've ever heard.
