Is there any real advantage in carrying a firesteel rather than just a bic? After all a bic can be used as flint and steel even when it has no fuel left.

True, but a Zippo can be refilled with gasoline, kerosene and such.

Best bet is a handful of Bic lighters (note; not cheep Chinese disposables) a Zippo and a ferro-rod firestarter.

The fuel will dry out if not used over time, I usually have to fill mine at least once a week, even if I don't use it. This is a common Zippo thing, how are you not aware of this?

The fuel leaks out of the case and evaporates over time.
If you leave a zippo in storage for like a month it'll run completely out and you'll have to refuel it

Zippos are not air-tight and even if not used, the fuel will evaporate within a week.

As a smoker, I only use my Zippo when going out to a pub or something and use a Bic for daily use.

Ever heard someone to tell you to wipe up a gas stain and not throw the rag in the trash? Or just not clean it up atall? Because the majority of the gas will just evaporate and if you toss it in a can with a rag, you know have a fuel soaked tinderbox that is evaporating fuel into a contained area.

personally i like the whole proceedure, i check the whole thing out when i do have to fill it. wipe down and check the condition of the wick and pull it out if need be and wipe it down if it's a bit carbon caked, check the flint.

just like any tool, proper maintanance is key.

No. The sparks from a lighter can ignite gas and shit, but they are too weak, and sparse to ignite cotton balls let alone natural tinder.

i suggest a "peanut lighter", as it has an o-ring to stop the fuel from evaporating. it can also stand upright for hands-free use, and the shell can be used as a waterproof container for whatever

Replace parts? I still use my dad's Zippo (>>29374) that he got sometime between
the 1950s-1970s and other flints and fluid, it's still working today.

Of course as I mentioned up-thread, I only use it when "going out" and use a Bic
for my every day cigarette smoking needs.

Permenant match beats a zippo. O ring keeps fuel from evaporating and will burn any liquid fuel. I've filled mine with a lady friends perfume at the trail head. Smelled a little but worked fine. Plus you have a spark when you run out of fuel. Real ones can be difficult to find since they don't make them anymore but chicom knockoffs can be had in e bay for a couple dollars.

Zippos are great lighters, but not the best for outdoors. I honestly just throw a handful of Bics in my bag when I'm going on a trek, but nothing beats a zippo for cache around town.
