Survival skills?

No.289260 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
i often wonder what you anons mean about 'survival skills'. i'm from northern maine, and have spent my whole life hunting, camping, fishing, trapping, building shacks, hiking, gardening, etc. i'm 19. i'm extremely comfortable in the woods, and even feel i could make an extended stay there, as in months. i wonder, though, if you folks would view that lifelong experience as a real set of survival 'skills' or just general knowledge that would get me killed. does a person have to take classes or some shit? a lot of people on /out/ seem to look down on bushcraft novices, talking about ultralight shit, tacticool stuff, BoB, whatever, and i wonder if those folks are city dwellers that have the nicest axe ever and therefore are better equipped to handle the wild.

tl;dr is my lifelong experience and grandpa's axe better than your ultralight fiskars dildo and endless hours of youtube how-tos? which is more important?
