hiya, /out/
I'm looking for a tent that I can carry with me backpacking. I don't really want to spend much, but I don't want a nigger tent. I'm split between spending some more on a eureka tent with a rainfly and shit, or buying one of these cheap things and throwing a tarp over it. Thoughts?

FWIW if that's one of those $30 tents, they don't need a tarp, but one's handy in lieu of a vestibule.

I was thinking max $100. I'll be camping in the temperate US, for 1-5 day stretches. Hopefully as light as I can get it. Weight is of low importance to me, however.

From what I read on amazon, it's not the most waterproof tent on the market (understandably). I carry tarps anyway, so I'd likely suspend one over it and be on my way

You nigger, Eureka tents are literally the cheapest semi-decent tents out there, and even then they're not really that good.

If you can afford to get to the outdoors, in a car that you own, maintain and buy gas for, then you can afford a good tent.

Pick one. Seems tents fall in two catagories:

Shit tier- while perfectly functional at keeping out bugs will not withstand high winds, heavy rain, snow accumulation, ect (just when you need it to!)

And "up". You really can fit in many catagories between shit tier and God tier. So few really come in at the $100 mark.

I personally LOVE my Alps Mountaineering Chaos 3. Withstood a savage AZ monsoon (high winds combined with very heavy rain!).

But it was more than $100.

Pic related is what an AZ monsoon looks like from a distance. Very localized downpour and winds. From same trip.

I had a Eureka tent for a decade that worked well in every condition. I took good care of it. Now I'm just looking for a replacement and don't really want to spend 200 dollars for a fucking big agnes tent

Related to this thread I guess is what size tent would you recommend for backpacking? Right now (mostly car camping) I use a 3 person tent and it sleeps 2 people with enough room in the middle for clothes and such. Should I look at a smaller one for backpacking?

That tent dies not come factory seam sealed. If you do not seal the seams it will leak worse than a colander. To be honest a $30 Ozark trail Wal-Mart dome tent is a better quality tent.
