Hey /out/
How would I go about attaching my sleeping bag to the bottom of my backpack?
No straps on the bottom, I guess I didn't think it through when I bought the pack.

This isn't a bad idea, but I've never sewed anything in my life. Plus, would the stiching put wear and tear on the pack?

Of course it's going to. But it's that or getting a new pack.
Go to a fabric store, should have the clasps and fabric, and probably know someone that will stitch it on for a price

Tactifag kit sewer here.

Reinforce the stitching area with another layer of Cordura. Sew this in a 'Box-X' Pattern, and bartac it at the corners. Won't go anywhere now and it's probably more secure than any other bit of your bag. Ideally 1000D but 500D double stacked works just as well.

buy a bigger backpack. In Europe, we carry everything in the inside. This increase the comfort.

if you absolutely cannot buy a new bag that can actually fit the sleeping bag then i would recommend you buy something similar to the following;

or anyother kind of broad straps with a pass through buckle that can be tightened

put the staps between the shoulder straps of the bag, loop them all the way around the back, slip the sleeping bag inside the two straps, tighten everything up, go on your merry way

but it's still a backwards way of doing it

Any way you can attach it to the top on the pack rather than bottom?

Or if your tight on money an old Alice pack or anything milsurp will be better than this pack

Just cut four slits in the bottom of the backpack and pass straps through them and around your sleeping bag. It's not like this thing was ever waterproof so you won't really be hurting it, just sew around the slits so they don't get bigger.

Sewing is a very handy skill, you should learn at least a little bit so you can mend things on the trail.

The stitching itself would not if you were careful and didn't cut threads while sewing it on. There would be some wear from carrying the weight, but >>292989 has the right idea. A box-X pattern is a box with an X in it. If you're on a machine, reverse stitch each end. Either way, use upholstery thread and a very pointy needle.

People need to stop doing this. Seriously, it's a bad idea. If you can't fit your sleeping bag into your backpack, then that means you need a bigger backpack. It is extremely important to keep your sleeping bag dry for safety reasons; the outside of your pack is about the worst and most exposed place for your sleeping bag. Even if you put your sleeping bag into a waterproof dry bag (heavy) and strap that to the outside of your pack, it is still highly exposed and could just as easily get a hole in it from when you set it down on the ground (it's on the bottom of your pack after all), and thus let water get inside when it rains. Plus, it bangs around while you're walking, it makes you look like a fucking plebe, and I will laugh at you.
