pretty much nothing. id have to say everything serves a purpose or potentially serves a purpose.

the only random things are when i go on casual trips and dont change my clothes and go with whatevers in my pockets. which usually isnt that random, but sometimes can cause a pen to stow away on my trips.

as for just cheap, id like to single out my watch. its just a timex, im not sure the official model but it was $40 bucks, small, has a chronometer or whatever the name is i tachymeter, and is water proof. also has the date but it tends to stick (changes on its own fine) so when there is a month with 30 days i have to manually adjust the time a full 24 hours to get to the next day.

I learned the hard way that I need to get a good compass this weekend. I went to a conference/competition where I was a last minute addition for orienteering because I can read a compass and made myself available. We thought they wanted us to use a standard model compass and would supply one for competition. Instead we wandered around a forest using dead reckoning(Thank God I grew up just wandering around the woods) and a terrible topo map. We weren't the most accurate, but we were done first, didn't quit, and weren't too scared to go out in the woods without "proper equipment"
tldr: orienteering without a compass sucks, but is also fun

You only need the time though. In the morning, sun's east, at noon, it's next to the equator, in the evening, it's west. It's vague, but it's as precise as you'll get with an analog watch, and both actually have a bad precision.

Orienteering with a compass is like a totally different thing. Watch tricks help when you lose your compass, but if you're serious about orienteering, you need a compass.

I disagree. If i take of my watch and use some stick that gives a nice precise shade i can find out directions with the precision of a compass.
I compared it to compass rose that was fixed to the ground, and it was even more precise because there was no such thing as magnetic declination difference,

Yeah instead there's an ecliptic declination.

I compared watch tricks with a compass countless times, and every single time there was a huge difference. Don't even get me started on clock drift.

People who find their way with the sun and their watch simply don't need a compass, because that's not what a compass is for. Everyone looks at the sun to get such a vague bearing, or at a button compass so it's more practical. But if you plan on precisely locating yourself or following a precise path in the wild, you absolutely need a compass.

I had that watch, loved it...I think the great thing about it was how intuitive the digital setup was. It was freakin' easy to set everything even without reading the manual.

MFW I saw it in this pic while I was wearing it... if this guy used it it must be quality.

One of these coghlan six-function emergency whistles. I like that it's one small item that can act as a back-up to many different things.

The compass is ok, the thermometer is pretty accurate. Works good as a pack light, but I need to get new batteries for it. The whistle is nice and loud, too. Never had to use it in an emergency, but if I'm hiking in bear territory I give it a toot around bluffs and blind corners so as to announce my presence.

Because it's an Opinel, ironically priced at $12.95. They're good AND cheap knives.
It's not because you only want a small and affordable knife that you need to get a shit one, because then you sometimes realize that wood can break shit knives. Opinels are definitely great knives, and also very affordable. Basically the folding version of a Mora.

The clippers have this as a removeable unit and you can store an extra flint in it too.
So when the gas runs out you pop this little sucker out and carry on.

I actually get a lot of use out of the thermometer during the winter time.

I run pretty hot when I'm active, so I have a hard time judging ambient temperature when I'm out snowshoeing. I keep an eye on the temperature so that I know about how much re-layering I'll need when I stop moving.
