They work. The material is completely waterproof and very breathable. Also relatively lightweight, if you go for the lighter version, Driducks. The problem is they aren't very durable, and can be torn relatively easily. One of these is my motorcycling rain jacket because it's inexpensive enough to keep in my saddlebag and forget about it, and I might lend it out to a friend if we go on a hike and he didn't bring a rain jacket, but that's about it.

i just used a spray water proofing (forget what its called) to make a jacket and workshirt water proof comfortable and does a pretty damn good job

ponchos suck though.. you sweat so much in them because they're plastic. plus they're all crinkly and annoying. but they are super cheap and they keep you dry (at least from the outside).

these froggy toggy things looks pretty fucking cool but they're a bit spensive for me, as i rarely would need such a thing

I own a wool poncho treated with a waterproofing treatment, and I love it. It keeps me warm when it's cold, breathes when it's hot, and it's big enough to be a shitty shelter if I need it to.
Sure I get some strange rooms, but it's more than worth it.

Yes, present tense implies I use it regularly. Frogg Toggs are designed to be roomy to accommodate any gear you are wearing.

If by "bike" you mean motorcycle, then a poncho would be a bad idea. It would blow behind your neck and you'd get soak if you rode over about 20 mph.

For bicycles, I've been pretty happy with carradice ponchos which are actually better than raincoats because they let air in.
