The group of people formed a human chain out to the girl so they could keep her head above water until help arrived.
Unfortunately despite emergency crews best efforts they just couldn't get to her, the creek was, by now, a raging torrent and they still had a long way to go. This whole scenario elapsed within a very short timeframe.
It was incredibly tragic, I believe at the last point people were trying to pass air to her mouth to mouth before they were all washed away.
It was incredibly traumatic for everyone involved. Especially for the family that lost a daughter just before Christmas.
The moral of the story I guess is that everything in Australia just wants you dead.
