Hey guys looking at getting a utility atv, any recommendations? Anything to avoid like fire? Trying to keep it under 7000 looking you buy new. I don't need top speed just something that can handle trails really well.

iv used the big bear 400 ( the predecessor to the grizzly you are looking at ) they quit making them in 2012 i believe but you an still find them gently used or new in some places, its a pretty minimalist design and i like the fact that some of them had a rope pull start, along with an electric start,
a semi automatic clutch is nice , to be able to control the speed and gearing,
it may not be the prettiest, but it is fairly versatile you can use it to do work or you could play around with it, just pick what seems to fit your needs

i personally like the semi auto clutch to have control over your gearing, you want to go fast put it in a higher gear, you want low end torque and control put it in a low gear, there were some recalls with the big bear for something, but i dont quite remember what, and i never had any issues with mine other then cracked fairings and punctured tires from riding it too hard,

What are your plans with it? Using it as transportation around a farm/ranch, or are you intending on adding implements like a plow, utility trailer, grader, etc?

450's "enough" for getting around. For any real utility, I'd go 600+. (My dirt bike's a 525, if that puts things in comparison...)

Elevation will affect power as well, the higher you go the more you lose. There's no replacement for displacement.

I think those have power steering? Might be nice depending on your terrain and if you've got something behind it.

Pop the airbox off and look at the air filter. If it's dirty/crusty and looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years, the rest of the engine probably hasn't been maintained either. Superficial scratches on the plastics are expected in a used vehicle.
I'd rather buy something that looks a little rough on the outside but has been taken care of mechanically than something that's been abused and not maintained, just "cleaned up" after every ride.

If you're only after riding trails/OHV areas, get a sport kwad. Better suspension/handling/performance in that application. Don't need a quadzilla for trails. And don't be that quadtard everyone hates doing donuts in the parking lot all day long. Go ride.

you are completely right about the whole 600 plus for real utility, you could make due with a 450 or even a 400 but it may seem strained, or yeah as he said if its going to be strictly for trail riding try a dirtbike its not terribly hard to learn,
im actually looking into getting a dual sport any opinions on what i should get? 6 ft 3 185 lbs if it matters, i havnt rode alot but i have experience on an atv and on a dirtbike a handfull of years ago money is a bit of an issue though

It's not till I get up to 10k+ft that my 525 really starts to run like a dog.

Bikes have a steeper learning curve, but once you get past that they're far more fun than a kwad. Plus they're generally easier to get plates on, making them about the ultimate /out/vehicle. You can find used bikes for $3k-ish that'll serve you well for years if you maintain it.

I wanted a KTM from the get-go... Kickass bikes ready to go right out of the box, but they are pricey. I was looking at the WR450's till I found a smoking deal on my KTM 525, and it went home with me that day. Personally I'd rather have the power/engine and not twist the wrist as much, than be miserable riding and wishing I had more.

Don't forget to budget in gear/equipment too. Helmet, boots, gloves, pants, armor...

Good, yeah, ergos can be a bit different from other brands though.
Test-drive one if you can.

With sleds, I can ride most Polaris chassis (Pro, IQ, IQR, Edge).
Cats, I can do the M and Proclimb after some getting-used-to.
Every time I've rode a skidoo XP, I regress about 5 years of riding. Just doesn't work for me. The XM's are better, but I'm much more comfortable and confident on a Pro or M sled.
I'd have to imagine quads are the same way.

Also keep in mind dealer support... especially if you're not doing your own wrenching. Having a good dealer can really make or break a brand for you. There's very few dealers local to me I'd trust with my machines. (KTM dealer's ~70mi north of me, Poo dealer... probably 130 miles away. I can source parts locally, but I don't trust the local shops with a wrench near my toys.)

I plan on using it for hunting, fishing, and tail rides along with pulling trees and other yard work things. So sadly a dirt bike will not suffice, but they are a hell of a lot of fun.

I've always witnessed the 450's keeping up with the 700's on the trail it's just on the open road or highway that the 700's eat up the 450's I can go higher though, I'm just not sure if it's necessary. Anyone have anymore input, thanks for the input so far also

Suzuki and Arctic Cat are my top brands and Yamaha is decent too. Polaris is really good but only certain years. Honda is god tier for reliability and low maintenance but are very far behind on features such as IRS and diff lock both of which are very important for rough trails. Honda also has that new tranny they've been pushing but it can't be repaired and must be fully replaced at a cost of $2000 or more

when it comes to standard vs auto i currently have both and prefer the auto. the standard is kinda rough due to the auto clutch. you have no control over it so it's kinda jerky when you shift. most autos also have a low range which is basically a second mechanical tranny that has 1-3 gears designed for pulling

if you don't want top speed i'd suggest something like a 500 which still goes about 90-100km/h and they have plenty of power for trails as long as you don't put massive mud tires on and even then you could also add a clutch kit

i'd also suggest getting a good winch. there's nothing worse then getting stuck in the middle of no where. personally i won't touch anything but Warn and synthetic cables are preferred

but like i said polaris is really hit and miss. they will have years with tons of problems then make a perfect year and the thing is like a tank rivaling even Honda reliability

personally if i were in the market today i'd look for a arctic mud pro, i've never rode one but a few friends have them and it's a pretty amazing on the trails. i believe they also have a modal with a diesel engine but it's more of a work horse

This probably has a lot to do with the fact that I learned a foot shift starting at about age 6, but my shifts are so much smoother on foot shift than thumb shift. Plus, they're the cheapest Honda transmission option so that's just a bonus for me.

i went last year and walked into the dealer with my heart set on Honda and wanted either the Rincon or Rubicon Canadian trail edition but the lack of IRS(believe rincon has it) and diff lock was annoying and then when i started looking at the other brands they had i found out Suzuki had everything plus it was $1000 cheaper and suzuki offers a farm discount which saved me another $400. at the time Suzuki also had a promotion for a free 2500 warn winch(had to pay install) which was upgraded to the 3000 since they didn't have the 2500 in stock. in the end i got more features and ended up about $2000 less then the Honda

OP you might also want to check on the chassis size. if you're bigger you'll most likely find the full size is more comfortable and also they usually have a bit more ground clearance. i highly suggest sitting on a few or even a test drive if they will let you(most wont) and find what's most comfortable for you. comfort is a massive factor if you're planning to be on it for longer then an hour or 2
