I have a question for American campers and whoever else has a lot of wild venomous snakes.

How do you deal with it? I heard you usually get bit because you stepped on them or very near them. Do you simply have to keep your eyes on the ground at all times? what a way to live.

Pretty much this. I do carry a walking stick but most snakes don't need it. They just want to be left alone. I've seen rattlers and cottonmouths on several occasions, but only ever had to kill two cottonmouths. Those fuckers can be territorial.

The vast majority of snake bites happen because somebody tries to handle the snake - I don't want to look it up but I think 85% or more would be a safe low end guesstimate.

People out innawoods/innadesert do get tagged from time to time after stepping on or very close to a snake, but it can be avoided most of the time by not stepping where you can't see. Pit vipers like to sit in the crevices or next to rocks, or along the edge of large fallen trees. Most accidental bites happen when people step over or too close to those objects without seeing the snake.

Don't step where you can't see and watch where you're stepping, and everything's good. Following that logic will avoid almost any issue.

I'm hundreds of times more afraid of ground bees - and hundreds of stings sure that they're a real threat.

Most snakes tend to avoid people since they are not prey, and bite only when they feel threatened.
Most snake bites in my country comes from accidentally stepping on them(especially pit vipers since they are camouflaged really well] . Except pythons, because they think we are prey.Even then python deaths are really rare.

Take it from an Aussie who saw several King Brownsnakes - 2nd deadliest venom in the world - before he learned to skateboard.

There are just two points to consider: 1) snakes are cold-blooded and 2) they don't have ears, but sense vibration through their bodies.

Therefore, snakes are more active when the weather is warm, regardless of night or day, and you need to move slowly and either hit a sizeable walking stick on the ground as you go, or stop every thirty metres or so and stomp few times to let them get out of your way.

As a child I jumped over a red-bellied black-snake (20th deadliest) and kept on running, stopped short of a python in its attack position (which I didn't even see; my friend shouted 'snake!') and stopped within a meter of a king brown while walking fast.

Go slow, hit the ground, be wary of places where its warm close to the ground, especially open, sunny fields.

One was lurkan around a stock tank less than 100 yards from headquarters on the family ranch. I went to chase bass and he got was in the path and refused to move and showed me his mouth. Too many kids and doggies around to let that slide.

The other was at a reservoir where I often go to camp and fish and swim and generally play innawater and drink beer. He was in the campground and refused to go. Once again, too many kids and dogs to leave him be.

Tl;dr carry snake spray, bear spray, wasp spray, two pistols and AR15 or stay home.

I was taking pictures of a rat snake in a small tree, while tanding on the edge of a wooded area with a lot of leaf litter. After a few minutes I started to hear what sounded like faint crackle/fizzle sounds of a fire. I looked down and noticed I was being swarmed by ants - the sound was thousands of little legs racing across the leaves under me.

They weren't fire ants thankfully, and I wasn't bit or stung (i had jeans on, a had a few biting at my socks underneath but most stayed outside) - I managed to dance around and brush the swarm off of me before getting bit or stung.

Sneaky bastards.

It's really not that difficult. Just be aware of your surroundings. Good boots help too. It's not like every ten feet there's a snake to avoid. And mostly if they bite it's because you scared them or got too close too quickly and they didn't get the chance to run away. I've been hiking and camping in central texas, and in the desert around phoenix, semi-regularly for about 6 years and i've probably seen about twelve snakes in that time.

As a kid I stepped on a water moccasin's by freak accident as I was walking around a lake in FL. I actually saw the fucker as my foot was already in the process of stepping on him.

I fucking jumped and ran like a little girl, but I think the only thing that saved me from getting bit, is the little bastard had a frog in his mouth. Some half eaten frog saved my ass..

It's just like any other thing that's dangerous. Your around them enough to know the risk and minimize it with experience. Certain snakes behave differently than others. One of my most memorable experiences /out/ involved a snake (it wasn't venemous though).

I've never seen or heard of a snake picking up a habit like that (as somebody who's spent way too much time observing & learning about them), but Alligators do it all the time.... So I guess it's possible.

When I was a kid I fished around a pond in my neighborhood, only about 10-15 feet deep and a few hundred yards across. There was this huge snapping turtle that watched me from underneath the water - he would sit about 5 feet out on a slope where the water starts to get deeper, neck stretched so his face was a couple of inches beneath the surface. He'd just sit there and stare at me. That turtle took out an entire small flock of ducks one summer during a drought, I got to see it happen on one occasion.

Snake venom is not poisonous when ingested.
I dont recommend eating venom glands though because you can still suffer from the effects of the venom if you have cuts on your mouth or ulcers in your digestive track.

yep. you walk with your eyes on the ground if you know what's good for you.

around the rivers and bayous they can be real plentiful. they get bigger than my arm, too.

sometimes the cottonmouths hiss at you to let you know they're there. the rattlers are pretty easy to avoid.

the snakes that worry me are in the trees over the rivers, where they sleep and, as you pass by in your kayak/canoe or whatever, they get spooked and fall clear out of the tree. never had one land in the boat, but they've gotten really close to it. i keep a machete beside me just for snakes. my dad carried a shoulder slung .22.

They fucking taught that to me, as someone growing up in Scouts, in the Mojave Desert. No one ever mentioned "by the way? California Kings are black and white."

So there I was, free-climbing up a cliff about two-hundred feet tall, at seventeen. I finally get to the top, reach up and pull, and there's a giant-fucking-snake, coiled up and staring at me, and I had no idea what it was. I can climb two hundred foot cliffs with nothing but "eh, it looks ok." But I see a snake or spider? I freak out. I almost let go and dropped, because no one had ever bothered to teach me that this snake isn't poisonous.

God damnit. Could I be more bitter at scouts? No. By the way? Snakes are dicks and they hate you. Not venomous? Sure man--you won't die. But it hurts like shit when they bite you, and THEY BITE YOU.
