Currently driving a Jetta that I am trying to gear up for /out/ventures. Looking at a new vehicle next year, this one caught my eye.

I had a 4 door wrangler. More than enough room for 1 person. Aside from the bad factory computer I loved it. Actually went camping with 4 people and plenty of room for basic gear. Great off road capabilities from the factory and I used it plenty. Especially when it snowed or flooded.

That said, I'd probably go with a used small quad cab truck. Like the Colorado or Canyon. Option 2, get a van and convert it to a camper. The question is, what do you want you're vehicle to do? Most any 4WD is adequate unless you're doing serious off roading, like rock crawling, or certain types of trail. If you want serious off road capability, I would suggest the wrangler. Hands down the best factory off road vehicle.

Girlfriend is a jeep fangirl, she has owned a few and they have all been solid (then why has she owned more than one you ask? Operator error). All of hers have been 97-2000 era though.

I love my subaru wrx, but it doesn't have the ground clearance to be a true /out/ car. Best snow traction ever though.

FYI OP the Renegade is based on the Fiat 500. Won't be any good for any serious off-roading, but if you're just looking for something cheap and with decent ground clearance, might be ok.

One of the best vehicles I've ever owned for /out/door shot was a bronco, preferably with the 300, but mine had a 408.

We've used full size american vans as our /out/vehicles. Lot's of room for gear, decent ground clearance, and lower cost (used) than pickup trucks.

The Forrester is awesome value. Got a 2003 in almost mint condition for less than 5 grand. It's still in way too good a condition for serious off-roading, but the symetrical AWD can do amazing things.

Got a couple friends that went the mini-truck route. Put some shit in the bed and throw some mountains between you and your destination, all of a sudden it's struggling to hold the speed limit and you're still only getting 14mpg.

IMO go with a half-ton. You don't lose much (if any) gas mileage, and you get far better performance. I really don't see the attraction to mini-pickups. Modern half-tons do well all around.

3/4-ton+ if you need the additional capacity. Most people don't.

shipping was expected the first of this month for mine or close to that, they are still pushing it back now they are saying they will start shipping out the frame kits to those who just ordered it on the 15th so im hoping to get it by the end of the month ( so much for putting it together during my april break guess im going fishing ) i spent 1700 on everything and am expecting another 300-400 for the motor, so in total 2100 and that's alot less then what alot of other people are doing
im glad someone thinks its cool i mentioned it in /n/ and they yelled at me because it wasn't a bike people in the /dbt/ on /o/ some seem to like it and some don't

The engines are neutered.
The suspension is set up for a car, not for hauling anything.
Brakes aren't designed for stopping heavy loads.
And like I said, the mileage improvement just isn't there to make the size and cost difference worth it.

Not saying they don't have their applications, but if you're planning on buying a truck to use for trucky things, just buy a real truck to begin with.

to be honest i would wait quite a bit before jumping into it they already have a ton of orders on their hands ( over a quarter million dollars i believe) and they are testing out all sorts of new concepts and ideas, it would be cool to wait and see what all they come up with to decide what you want . it also may not be a great idea if you dont have mechanical experience because you have to assemble all of the parts ect like i said il be sure to post pictures of mine when i finish putting it together

I know the pain. Had my old 78 ford out on a road trip up to Canada and the new radio shit the bed two hours into it. It was under warranty and all, but it was a boring drive.
What tires do you have on your dodge? My 95 f150 has some Goodyear all-terrains, they've been great so far.

Dunno, but they're just okay. Wearing pretty quick, and they kinda suck in the snow. Dealer put 'em on before I bought the truck so I didn't really have a say in it.
I had BFG AT/KO's on my last truck and liked them, along with a set of studded Arctic Claws for the winter. I'll be getting a set of studded winter tires for this truck before next winter and deal with whatever's on there now for the summers (when I rarely drive the truck).
17"-rim tires are expensive though.

Hoping to market my photos a little harder this summer, been doing pretty well lately... the extra income certainly helps when it comes to affording expensive hobbies.

Sounds like an abortion. Every minitruck I've used could carry the same load as a van or full sized truck.

You ever own a Westfalia? Yeah, its a cool design and looks SUPER practical to the uninitiated.

When you actually own one(as i did) you realize the things way too fucking fragile to be reliant on, and way too expensive to maintain as a daily driver.
Its anemic engine chugs gas if you push it too hard, that you'll almost deff. end up using more then if you drove an econoline or astro as hard.

If it had a tougher engine and better part support, it would be the ideal 'paved road' /out/ mobile. As it stands, its a horrible buy, and the syncro model is downright idiotic.

They let me look inside of there's and despite theirs being from the 90's it still managed to withstand time with 600 000 kms on the OD.
So I came to believe it was a sturdy beast.

I don't know about the Ranger or the S10, but trucks like the Toyota Hilux/Stout, Isuzu KB, Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Junior, Peugeot 504 were solid work/farm trucks. Just ask anyone from Australia, Southern Europe, or South America.

Sure the diesel engines were slow by American standards and didn't have enough power to pull a 30' boat and cruise at 80mph (45 was doable), but they had good gearing, were reliable and easy on gas.
