>>300689>Vehicles erode the dirtBut they compress the soil (which is why we don't drive on hiking paths) which prevents erosion.............
So no, dickheads spin tires and make ruts, ruts are what you're complaining about, not 4x4s.
Please, don't tell me you believe this chump spewing off his fringe bullshit, why would you listen to any extreme opinion?
We're not trying to say that wheeling is perfect, 100% LNT, but neither is hiking for christ sake, you either have a blazed path or your stomping on the nature, you're disturbing the wildlife and changing the landscape from what it once was. Trails are fucking terrible for erosion, many people don't realize that trails are basically basins for water to collect in (even if they look elevated). I tried to convince a friend of this, and it took taking him out after an ice storm (around a cm of ice on everything, literally everything) and showing him plain and simple, that the trail was the most densely covered area of ice, and that most the fragments coming down from trees would run down towards the trail.
Do note, this is a well maintained part of the AT, not just a hacked up no-thought trail pushed into the woods.
But essentially, trails are essentially man made stream beds.....
Also note, I'm not trying to say hiking is more destructive than 4x4s, I'm saying every /out/ activity is by essence NOT leave no trace. The only way to not leave ANY trace whatsoever is to fucking stay home and die (But even that leaves a trace, so fuck it). You can't make the argument that by leaving any trace, 4x4s are inherently evil or some bullshit.
Point being, the douche bags in these threads are plain loony. They live in some kind of fantasy land where anything but a prius on a paved surface is a fucking death machine, and they should be guilty about everything they do (hence the insatiable need to tell us how awful we are, they'd be guilty about just letting us go on with our ignorant ways.
