I'm at the wrong computer, so I don't have my list handy, but one of the better no-frills guides out there is the SAS handbook. I forgot the real name, but that thing is like all the BSA books combined. It's probably the one book I will have a copy of in every vehicle I own.

It's better to read it and practice the techniques before you need them, but it's written well enough that if you had to, you could use it right away.

Both are worthwhile reads though.

The Backwoodsman is really good for knowhow and learning little tricks, but it can really dwell on things related to firearms more than other subjects, which can make it a chore to read unless you specifically want info on that subject.

American Frontiersman is good as well, even if it is a bit more commercialized. I trust their reviews of products (not that I don't trust The Backwoodsman) and their tips and article are well written.

Just read both and call it good rather than picking one over the other.

DL. The /k/ommando torrrent. Also all sorts of army torrents. My dad gave me some bushcraft books last summer from th 80s and I'msory I can't remember the author. They were alright, but the military innawoods manuals will help you out more if you can get past the dryness and understand they do it for a living.

I have the pocket version of this. Pretty neato. Has a visual guide of edible plants in the back, though having never attempted to forage I couldn't say how reliable it is.
