Camping in Algonquin Park

A friend and I are planning a trip to Algonquin Park this summer. Can anyone recommend a 3 to 4 day trip? I want something fairly challenging, but doable in the aforementioned time period.

I will be there in a few weeks when the ice melts and I've been to algonquin about 30+ times in the last 5 years.

A nice trip (not too hard but still requires some work) is the 80km Canoe lake loop. If you toss me an email I can give you far more info than you need.

Buy one of these for the location you are going: http://www.algonquinmap.com/ because the official park map will kill you.

I survived on the official map for years, but fuck it messed me up at times. Some stuff just didn't correlate at all with reality. I wouldn't be surprised if the map has killed someone. Jeff's maps are decent though.

I've been camping in Algonquin since I was in my mother's womb and almost every year since (some years I did three trips).

A friend of mine told me about a trip starting and ending at Cache Lake. Pic related. Follow the black line into the purple line. What do you think of that one?

I fucking love maps.

My favorite thing is to try and beat the map,

IE- like you said, the park map for that place is fucked.

So grab your compass, a level, and a surveyors scope (little one, not the mounted tripod full sextant ((But cool on you if you lugged that thing all the way out))) and go off trying to figure which things are right, wrong, moving land marks around, adding altitudes and shit.

Goddam its fun.....

Hell, I was going to make a snide remark about having a portage store rental canoe, but your maps information was so damn good that I just went and bought the four pack, plus kilarney plus the freaking gigantic wall map.

Hello fellow Algonquin friends.

It's going to be a late ice-out this year (or, late given trends in the past two decades). It's a glorious pace for winter camping as well.

I'd post pics, but my winter camping pics are mostly only on film.

What are the busiest places to avoid? (maybe it's obvious from looking at the maps)

OK, maybe that's a bit harsh, but it's busy and unless you get out at the crack of dawn, the access point is filled with inexperienced canoeists or ginormous groups taking up the entire launch.

Now, if you are a family getting out, its a great place to start as there are so many sites only one short portage away.

I prefer to come in from the west side, the Magnetewan area. It's a little rough starting out when the water is low, but very few people travel that route.

Wow. WAY BETTER than the park copies. Seems like the same waterproof paper, but these are almost a 3d topo type thing you would see on a newer garmin. Tonnes of info. Highly suggest these for anyone wanting Killarney or Algonquin maps. Compared to the park maps, these have way more info and I'm going on the assumption based on previous treks that the rest of these portages are all the correct distances. The park maps were off by hundreds of meters in a couple cases.

Plus the giant 6 foot wide one looks awesome in my workshop.

Did this route last year in about a week. Still trying to remember the exact spots we stayed.

We originally were going to go the other way(counter clockwise). But the gentleman at the rental place and I(since I was carrying the food) suggested clockwise due to the 5km portage.

Any other route suggestions?

In regards to the question of the ice out, I just got this email this morning:

“Due to substantial ice depths and lingering signs of winter in Algonquin Park, backcountry permits will not be issued until May 9, 2014. This includes permits for all ranger cabins and overnight backpacking trails. In addition, all campgrounds in Algonquin Park (except Mew Lake) are also expected to remain closed until May 9, 2014. Mew Lake Campground, normally open year-round will remain open. Full refunds will apply for current reservations. No penalty fees will be incurred for modifying arrival dates. All visitors with reservations through May 8, 2014 will be alerted by telephone.

Many roads to backcountry access points are currently snow covered and ice remains tight to the shoreline on most lakes. Conditions are unpredictable and not safe around Algonquin’s lakes and rivers. All day use activities on and around Algonquin waterways are strongly discouraged.

I got this email as well..... Does anyone have first hand experience with the killarney iceout? I couldn't find any info on that and the park is not answering the phone. I may fall back to killarney or kawartha if it is an earlier iceout than algonquin.

Killarney? Bro, you are talking about a park whose southern boundary pretty much lines up with the north end of the Algonquin boundary, but it on the north shores of Lake Huron. I am not %100 certain, but I would suspect that the iceout there is going the even later than Algonquin... don't forget about the prevailing winds off Huron will keep it colder, longer.

You're better off going south. Kawartha's sounds like a better choice right now.

I actually camped on the site near the 1140 marker on that picture. Amazing site, notwithstanding the cow and calves that sauntered through at 6am to the weeds out front in the bay.

Granted, that was still an amazing site, we did "the circle" at the tail end of hurricane katrina. That was a wet ass weekend. Came out early and stayed at Deerhurst for the last two nights. Needed a jacuzzi to relax :)

Great trip regardless, except gas jumped 20 cents a litre after we came out.
