I want to talk about bunkers, hideouts, the lot.

What is the most important thing to consider when constructing something of this variety? (Besides location of course)

Do you have a bunker or hideout? Did you construct it yourself? What did you consider in your design plan? Care to show examples?

How much did it cost to build your hideout? How much time did you put into it? Just curious about these things.

I currently own an off-grid cabin, but it's only about 90 minutes from a city right now; I've been considering building something more remote in the event that a Happening does take place within the next few years.

Have access to a 28 acre farm with a house in the middle of nowhere, have no bunker or hideout. If I were to build one, the most important considerations for me would be, in no particular order:

>safety (no cave-ins)
>rear exit
>concealability
>livability
>access to restocking provisions

I would rather buy a proper decomissioned one

They come cheap here, are usually in the middle of the woods and hold up against direct hits from bombs

Plus blast doors and gas protection and some with entrance for vehicles

just exactly what kind of "happening" are you wanting a bunker for?

in the case of an atomic attack, you're fucked. in the case of the great chimpining, you might be fine with just a cabin in a remote location far from urban areas.

now, if you really want just a nifty little hideout to go wait out some civil strife, i would recommend something like in your (OP) picture.

things to consider:

1. cave ins. if you are constructing something, make sure it is tough enough to withstand the elements. and not just the weather, you are going to be dealing with fallen branches, excessive water when it rains, rock slides, etc. i suggest you use materials like sheet tin for the roof.

2. water. water gets everywhere. if you are going to dig down into the earth, rather than build above it, you are going to be dealing with seepage all the time. make sure you bolster your walls heavily with some sort of vapor barrier.

3. a back door. some other anon mentioned this, but it must be stressed again. you dont want to be caught like dorner in your hideout and torched with no secret escape.

4. the necessities. food, drinking water, ammo, fire provisions, etc. all these things sound easy, but in the event of a happening, you are going to eventually run out. you may want to build "caches" of food and water in areas that are nearby but concealed.

5. medicine. there is a reason why i didnt put this in the above category. medicine and first aid supplies are going to be like gold in the event of a happening. stock up on any and all things you can think of. see if you can get ahold of penicillin or other antibiotics. keep everything sealed and then in metal containers.

6. firearms. no matter what your stance on gun control, it is always better to have a gun and not need it than to not have a gun and need it.

7. compass, radios, batteries, flashlights, and other non-foodstuffs. keep a stash of these with you in the hideout, but also keep some hidden like the food.

once you have spent a significant amount of time building your hideout/bunker, you will also need to have maps of your surrounding area detailing just where you hid all your goodies. you will also need maps of the nearby metropolitan areas and the area you are living in, unmarked, so that if you need to forage, or leave, you will know where you are going.

you may also probably want to bring books, and perhaps some other form of entertainment. there are certain wood burning stoves that can charge an mp3 player.

last thing, and probably most important:

DO NOT TELL ANYBODY ABOUT YOUR BUNKER/HIDEOUT.

once the cat is out of the bag, you cant fit it back in. friends, neighbors, distant relatives; all of these people will suddenly become the enemy in cases where food and water run short. if nobody knows about your bunker, they are less likely to kill you to gain possession of it and your supplies.
