Hey dudes.

Looking for some advice on cooking equipment and the sort. My girlfriend has decided she'd really like to spend more time /out/ with me since she enjoyed the small trips we've done so far. Usually, I like to lightweight and explore around. However, she's 5'1" and definitely not capable of what I am.

I figure, rather than just limit myself and not enjoy it, we'd turn the focus from exploration and hiking to cooking and setting up a good site. I'm definitely cool with carrying more weight. What do you cats use to make some good stuff while you're bushin' about?

A trangia set will let you cook some great meals. Or if you want to open fire, get a camp oven and skillet.

You don't need titanium.

If you are going car camping, a 12" cast iron pan like your picture will do everything for 2 people. Combine with a kettle/smaller pot for boiling water. Done.

Else.

Make sure there's no plastic parts(handles, lids, etc).

Make sure the lids of your pots also serve as pans.

Be okay with scorching your expensive shinies over an open fire.

If you buy a gas stove, make sure you get one that doesn't screw directly into the top of the canister. Rather the burner/element is self standing and has a hose that goes to the canister.

Dehydrated food is simple to make. Rehydrating food is as easy as making Instant Ramen or Kraft Dinner/Macaroni. Though some ingredients(Beans, meat) take longer to rehydrate.

Just be happy she's willing to go out in the woods with you. Make sure you pay extra attention to her mood and physical condition.

Start with day trips to weekends.

Ego much, Br'er Anon? Either way, let her lead every, and I mean every, hike. Let her set the pace. Lag a bit behind so she doesn't feel rushed. She'll do what she can without pushing herself too hard and hating the experience. Source: I'm the anon with a wife who has MS.

When car camping or not going too far from the car, take a lesson from your pioneer forbears. A 12" cast iron Dutch oven is the ultimate /out/ cookpot. It has a bail, so you can hang it from a tripod and simmer chili all afternoon while you set up your glorious base camp. It has little stumpy legs so it can set right down in the coals for use like a skillet. It has a lid with a raised lip so you can set it in the coals and then put some coals on top and bake glorious cinnamon or orange rolls for breakfast or cobbler for dessert.

It's also generally lighter and less bulky than a big skillet and a screen to set it on, but that's not saying much.

I've done quite a bit of dutch oven wizardry over the years and believe it's worth the weight with group cooking. Very versatile and forgiving as long as the seasoning is good .

I also have a smaller 4" cast iron skillet that's been passed down from my great grandmother and it feels like black satin. Cooks like a dream and has a habit of sneaking into my pack often.

My sister got my great grandmother's skillet. I got the knife they used at the deli when they had a grocery store. (All the great-grandchildren got something from the kitchen, which was cool.) It's the most often used knife in my kitchen.

Not that it matters here, but I also have a five generation picture that goes from my great grandmother to my son.

great. that means you don't have to sweat the weight.

BRING A GODDAMN STEAMER.

so much utility in one pot.

i have one that's a bit different than pic related. basically, it's a good sized stew-pot with a lip inside that supports a small cullender with a bail.

i have used mine to mull meade, make stew/chili, steam vegetables, etc.

only drawbacks are that the pot itself doesn't have a bail, but rather two handles. however, with some fishing swivels and steel leaders, you can make your own.

I remember a while, when me, my brothers, mom and step all went camping. Before my step-dad came into the picture, my dad would barely take us to the park, let alone camping. My step dad had a small camper he would take. There was pots and pans in there for certain uses, however, my step-dad would pride himself on cooking with very few things.

Now, I would agree with this guy. All you really need is a skillet. We use to joke with my other people when telling them about his outdoor cooking skills with such few stuff. We would say, "Yeah, he only uses a skillet and a knife most of the time, he even makes spaghetti over the fire."

Most of our meals came from a portable grill top, a skillet and sometimes tin foil, for hobo diners. The best was when he would make barbecue country style ribs, with thick barbecue sauce on one side of the portable grill top, over the fire, and in his skillet, he would try up potatoes and onions. Seriously, that shit was the best.

Lidge is the last cast cookwares made in USA and I av'oid Chinese castware. Some older Made in Taiwan' castware is great! But finding it...

Easier to go to Sports Chalet, Big 5 or Bass Pro and pick up current issue Lodge.

And yes, thier carbon steel skillets rule.

I own that exact stove.

It becomes cumbersome when trying to feed more than 3 people in a large pot.

A canister stand is pretty much mandatory. Else you're going to be stuck trying to level it with stones/twigs, since you don't always get a nice flat rock.

You can only use a partial windshield(pie tin cylinder around the burner).
