Will there be suitable trees everywhere you go?

I like hammocks but personally I'd get a tent first because more privacy, and more versatile if you can only have one.

Be a gearfag and have both. Then you can pack for the trip, rather than trip to your gear. :3

you guys are silly. A hammock can be deployed as a bivy if no tie out points are in your area. This is why i use a sleeping pad as opposed to an underquilt

Then maybe there are appropriate rocks or other features you can use. Just like you can't pitch a tent on rocky ground, on a slope, or in dense vegetation, hammocks have their limitations, but then you simply pick the right spot for it.

Am a Gearfag, have both... now I only bring the tent for situations with lady friends. Even my 45lb dog sleeps in my hammock with me while backpacking. (the reason i opted for a double layer.)

I've gone down to +15f with an air core pad and cosmic down 0° bag, still hanging. Seems to be more packable to me but what do I know.

This. Girlfriend does not hammock, so she owns a tent which we use on trips together. On trips with just myself or the guys, hammock 100%

i agree with sleeping pads in theory and for their wonderful usability on the ground but i can't stand one in a hammock. i'll lug my sleeping bag, fleece, and underquilt instead thanks :\

In my experience, every area I've wanted to sleep in has had a flat spot large enough for my tent, though sometimes I've needed to spend another 5 minutes looking or traveling. Not every area has had anything to hang a hammock from (pic related). It's not about being inflexible, it's about being miles from the nearest passable mounting point of any sort.

If you travel with hiking poles anyway then a bivvy mode might seem like a better option I suppose.
