Silver Maple is native and has wildlife value. Just don't use it as a landscaping tree or put it near where it can fall on structures.

That was mostly done after WWII when they also planted a shitton of A. platanoides.

You notice that nurseries nowadays no longer sell Silver Maple. Not that you'd need to buy them anyway since they're so incredibly easy to grow from seed.

Silver Maple is a creek/streamside tree that serves the same ecological function as birches. They like lots of water and when used as a lawn tree can suck your grass dry.

Vine maple is more of a chaotic neutral, really, but it's still a huge asshole. This is a picture of it doing what it does best: being passive aggressive at hikers.

Those are my most-hated plants. I hope they all burn in hell.

A. platanoides has relatively soft wood not useful for much outside of firewood. Also it chokes out native vegetation and nothing will grow around them aside from a few other introduced species like buckthorn.

The destruction to the ecosystem that this tree does far outweighs any positive assets it might have.

You can't grow anything under a Norway Maple because of its dense shade and shallow root network that sucks all the moisture from the soil. It is very invasive in PA. In fact, I think it may be the worst invasive plant in this state because it invades mature, undisturbed woodlands (most invasive plants tend to take over disturbed areas), and because it looks enough like a native tree that most people don't notice it taking over. If you live within a quarter mile or so of a woodland, your Norway Maple will eventually destroy the woodland.

Including such evils as garlic mustard, buckthorn, and English Ivy.

But I still dispute that A. platanoides isn't up there. While most invasive plants only colonize disturbed sites, this tree is an exception in its ability to take over mature woodlands.

red maple develops horrible chlorosis here, but drive 2 hours north and it thrives and dominates forests.

Norways are pretty shitty, but not that bad. They develop pretty decent form, though their wood is very brittle and the tendency to develop girdling roots makes them basically kill themselves out of a landscape. I would never plant or recommend an Acer platanoides, but I would never put it on the low end of the tree spectrum.

In PA, the natural forest cover is the Oak-Hickory type. Lots of those, Tulip Poplars, American Beech, sometimes Eastern White Pine (although they're more common in cultivation than the wild from my observations). Seldom see Sugar Maple.

So, rather than making a new thread, im going to ask in the tree thread. A couple years back, the county decided that the creek in my back pasture was eroding away, and that there were going to stop it. However, all the did was come in, cut down all the trees on the north side of the creak, then abandon the project and leave. Now erosion is a serious problem because no roots to hold the soil in place, and large chunks (the size of a car) are falling off into the creek. I'm going to plant some trees there, and try to re establish some roots in the soil, as well as putting some grasses over the newly exposed dirt. What is the right trees for this job? right now, the southside is covered in hedge apple, and cotton woods, but I would rather put in something without spikes/stupid little white fuzzes.

also, I have goats and cattle, so nothing toxic.

I know you don't want spikes, but man up and plant some black locust. Also some staghorn sumac. Also, Euonymous spp. has really netty root systems. They hold so strong that I couldn't rip out a small, established stump out of a planting bed with my truck.

Check out what they use on the side of onramps in your area, plant that.

Im located in north west Indiana (zone 5), and was considering cottonwoods anyways after reading up on them some. I don't like stickers, because the goats tend to stay in the shade, and ive had multiple infection from steping on a hedgeable thorn, then walking through the pasture, but if need be, i would use them over an inferior tree if i had to.

well the black locusts pretty much just have thorns in the canopy once mature.. they get to decent size. Since they are a legume, they fix nitrogen in the soil, which will help with undergrowth as well.

In NW Indiana, you have lots of options for streamside trees like Silver Maple, Red Maple, Sycamore, Pin Oak, etc. Ash wouldn't be bad in theory but they've all been decimated by ash borer in that part of the country so doubtful any nurseries carry them.

Piece of cake. Just collect the seeds when they drop (which as it's May should be soon) and plant them on location (be sure to remove the wings and seed coating)

Ohio Buckeye, Red, or American elm are also options; you may try those.
