I'm going to AfrikaBurn (Regional Burning Man Event) in 9 days and I'm ridiculously excited. I don't want to do anything except prepare cool stuff. I've been before so I know some of the basic survival stuff but there's always more to learn.

What does /out/ know/imagine would be great things to prepare/take with you to a burn party?

What events have you been to, which are the best ones and what are the best things about it?

What are the worst?

AfrikaBurn is not like that at all. You don't get threatening types really at all. It will probably reach a point where it's a bit of a mess but not yet.

I've been twice already. On my first trip I made a promise to myself that I would never miss another one. This year I actually flew from Thailand for the party. It's that amazing.

Last year there were 7000 people. This year 8500. Tickets sell out in seconds literally.

But there are a lot of free raves in the forests all over California where a couple hundred people get together, camp, and party for a night or two. I find those little gatherings so much more pleasant that I can't imagine ever paying hundreds of dollars for something like burning man, again. It was worth going once, for the sake of it. But it's just so dirty and an excuse for people to not shower, stink and be drunk.

Well, most people are high or drunk or both so if that offends you I can see how you'd find the atmosphere gross. We don't shower either (or only once) and use baby wipes the rest of the time to keep clean. In my experience we always take too much water, and people are so willing to share that it wouldn't matter much if we didn't have.

Any deficit in hygiene was more than made up with so many awesome parties to drift between, and cool things to see and massive burns to crowd around.

This is true. You can't underestimate the value good vibes can do to a fucked up asshole. Sometimes people wander into your camp completely confused not even able to explain what they took; if you have the patience to include them in your conversation/activities they will return the favour by amusing you in some way.

If you're a girl and drunk guys are hassling you I can see how that would be gross and off-putting, though.

Attend these kind of events often but I don't drink very much or partake of "The drugs"

My advice is always pretty simple. Drink lots of water and if you have some alcohol drink double the water. Bring a flashlight, GOOD boots that keep your feet dry and a good distance from the ground- Desert sand and Dust will dry the hell out of your feet so wear clean socks and bring a ziplock of clean clothing to wear on your way out of the event

I just got back from 10 days in Big Bend, you wanna talk hostile? Okay, here you go, pack everything you need for ten days, on your back, go walking in the desert for 15-20 miles a day for ten days, rely on water caches you have had placed along your route, and if someone were to ruin your cache or you were unable to reach or locate it, you'll die.

You fucking burners are all the same, hypocritical filthy trashy assholes who once a year get together and pretend like you're out in the wilderness while getting smashed and listening to EDM. Protip: everyone hates you, you all hate eachother, you all deserve exactly what you get, and what you get is to spend money and time around other assholes like you. I view your event as one massive containment center to keep you from actually going hiking, so I don't have to run into people like you on the trail.

bullshit, every year the part of the Karoo we go to is totally pristine. we have long drops, not portapotties, we only have the water we bring with us, there are medics there who will either tell you to drink water, give you a plaster or tell you to take yourself home

You're going to get a bit grungy after a week no matter where you are and IMO the dust at BM seems like it helps. But I went the wipes route too.

The only comparable sized event I've gone to is spring break on South Padre Island. I camped on the beach there for Texas week. 100K people, most of them in fully furnished hotels with full amenities. It was a fucking shitshow. There was filth on a level I had never seen before. The outhouse floors at BM were honestly cleaner than your average hotel lobby. It was like 100K zombies puked, shit and pissed on every surface on that island.

Yeah the attitude of the people going makes a real difference. When you know you need to take everything home with you you're less wasteful from the start. IMO the desert is so dry that people don't really get smelly, even with the inadequate sanitation.

The pit toilets there are (for the ~5 days anyway) more sanitary than the majority of toilets in the city. And the view from the open toilet into the expanse of the karoo desert is truly peaceful and beautiful.

I leave in 3 days now and I'm trying to get my stuff together so I don't inevitably forget something.

On that note, I have 2 inflateable mattresses but both of them have slow leaks. Both have 1 puncture that has been patched and I can't find any others. Does anyone on here have a cool hack for getting a mattress like this to stay inflated overnight? Would be grateful for advice.

so I added a few (more) vinyl patches and then put superglue around the edges, hopefully that does the job and there arent any more holes

the other mattress is split at a seam on the corner and it appears to be a writeoff. still, I have one (possibly) functional one and that's all I need!

I've been to plenty of music festivals that have lots of /out/doorsy people and the like. Experimental electronic and stuff, but also plenty of folk or acoustic rock with just one girl singing on the downtime day shows or something. These are in places pretty far out in forests or valleys. It's a lot of fun, but I really like the smaller ones. People take drugs and stuff, but I've met more than a few people who are just there to drink some beer and get down on the dirt. A lot of the time it's really chill.

From what I hear, BM does seem really overhyped. I'm going to try and spin fire at it this year because I wasn't able to go last year. You get a discount that way and I've been in with a couple troupes for a while now so hopefully it'll work out.

Been to Manifest, Lightning in a Bottle (2 years), Lucidity, and a bunch of renegades.

We don't even call them raves, any more, because we all grew up and it's just a place to relax and meet people, now (burning man isn't a rave, brah! It's like about art and science and shit!).

Go hang out up around Ojai, or in the San Gabriels, or out at dove springs. Bands show up and play. People get together and have a few drinks. I still do mushrooms, now and then, just like everyone else. But these days? We all have jobs and families and just wanted to have a nice weekend together. And it's not an event, or a get-away. It's just a nice time.

I don't get burning man. I kinda think it's for dilettantes.

I haven't been to a RAVE rave in a few years. Some insomniac event. It was my first and only "true" rave with thousands of people and several stages. Once I went to LIB I completely forgot about raves and that scene (not that I was really part of it).

I feel like I've seen enough to get a good idea of what BM would be like, just not with so much sand. From what I've gathered and the people I've talked to, SoCal festies are much more uppity. A lot more coke, speed, E. While NorCal seems a lot more laid back. More weed, mushrooms, acid, whatever. I'm from the bay area so naturally I think I gravitate towards the latter. Nothing beats a 3 day trip to a flow arts festival to learn all about fire spinning and dance in the high sierras, but that's just me.

You can tell some people are there to just hang out, and I respect that. I wish I had the cash to throw around a little more at these things. I do a lot of volunteering and stuff for the ticket, but it has some cool perks and you get to meet some really interesting characters.

Grew up in so-cal, but moved to SF for school (SFSU brah--mediocrity for life!).

I guess a lot of the more commercial crap is closer to LA. Went to Together As One for New Years, on lol-Y2K. Six people got killed over drugs, that night. That shit sucks.

But the get-togethers are still around, both up in humbolt and down in the san gabriels. They're just very small, and only locals are welcome. I used to push brooms at six am on sundays, so I get emails for both. The scene is still a nice place, but if anyone ever asks you for money? That place sucks.

Can recommend nowhere, takes place in Spain, was under a thousand people when i went in 2012. i think numbers have climbed to just over a thousand by now. I've heard good things about the other european burns too.
