Hey /out/ I'm interested in living as cheaply as possible and would appreciate some answers.

1. Were I to live in a tent on the outkirts of a town, would I freeze to death in winter?

2. How much would it cost me annually? (I have £7000 in my bank account)

3. Would it be possible to shower in a local swimming pool's showers every morning for free?

4. If the above is impossible, do you think it's possible to live without permaneny abode in a major city and still look good and remain healthy?

The reason I ask is that I'm 22 and currently waste my time from 6:30am until 6:30pm every day working or commuting, and it's making me suicidal. Any advice at all for someone in my position?

No. Insulate your tent. Get a sleeping pad. It's fine.

No idea. Can you camp for free? If yes, figure out how much your food and other necessities cost you, per week, then multiply that by 52.

Are they public showers? Then, as a member of the public, I'd assume you'd have access.

Possible, but very difficult. Just keep your work/looking-decent clothing set aside, and put it on only when you are going to be required to wear it. Take it off immediately when done needing to wear it.

Hmmm I suspected this, and I'm not doubting you. But I feel spending 3/4 of each day doing something that makes you depressed isn't worth it.

No, buy a US Army Modular Sleep System, they're rated down to arctic temperatures, and can be bought for around £60

Depends on your situation, this is a totally personal rate you'd have to work out yourself.

You will not be able to do this for free, however you could get a membership at a cheap gym which means you also get a place to work out and keep warm in your free time. No one would give you a second look if you go in at like 5am, work out, shower then do the same at night.

Yes, jeans don't really need ironing, t shirts can be kept neatly folded, as long as you have a hygiene kit (i.e. toothbrush, comb, scissors etc) you'll be okay. You could use a gym (see above) to keep healthy, just ensure your diet is good and healthy. An office job may be harder due to the whole suit and tie thing, but who knows, folding and rolling man.

But I feel that trying ot make myself happy by reminding myself that I'm making more money than other people doesn't make me happy, it just makes me guilty for not being happy.

How about getting a less insane job? Or a job you like? If you don't have a family to support, there are part-time positions that can let you scrape by in an apartment. I think you're a dumbass to suddenly go from one extreme to another. And that you'll regret it later (and by "later," I mean immediately, as soon as you do this).

I think that one of the biggest pieces of advice is to get membership to a gym so you can use their showers and kill time there. Do gyms often (or ever) come with laundry facilities?

If you don't have much savings, then why not teach English abroad - in East Asia, the Middle East, etc.? If you do it for two or more years, you can save up some serious money, meaning that when you get back to your country, you'll have a little freedom to take some time off. Oh, and don't worry about not having experience teaching, or knowledge of a foreign language. All these jobs require is that you are a native speaker. About half the English teachers in Japan had no prior teaching experience, and I'd say about 40% (still) speak little to no Japanese.

Don't fall into the working class trap, of thinking you should be grateful for the bullshit they put you through. No amount of money is worth feeling like shit every day. That "some people have it worse" bullshit is propogated by those at the top, to keep the drones plugging along.

srs bro, I know am going on a bit of a rant here, but quit that shit. Teach, travel, join the peacecorps, take a chance on life mate, you almost never regret it. I had a promising career in HR. I turned that shit down, and no matter how much money they offerd me, it would not be worth it.

- offer your services on CL
- do temp work
- work online, there is a link somewhere that shows various online work opportunities

If you go to the nice part of town, and find the goodwill center, you can pick up stuff for practically nothing, then turn a profit on it, on CL.

Seattle Hobo Anon here, I had a few threads here. It's not hard to live if you're willing to go the distance to get what you want. Looking like a fuckstain has nothing to do with living the transient lifestyle. It's easy to live in a lot of places that have resources for youth. Personally, I'm squatting at the moment and living the life. I don't need money for much unless I really want something. Actually, most of it goes towards the bus. I could get a job and stack some bread, in fact I still might.

Living in a tent would be pretty easy too. The hardest part about being homeless and living the homeless lifestyle is dealing with other people; be it hopping trains, sleeping on the street, or squatting in a house. It's just about being physically and mentally prepared to do what it takes and survive with what you have.

There's places to shower, you can stay pretty clean in a sink but a gym membership is all you really need if you have the dough. I encourage everyone to go out and find some purpose in their life, if you feel like you have none.

I have every weekend, lots of holidays, and lots of summer off to spend with family and friends. I make about $37k, but we're debt free and live carefully within our means. Everyone in the family loves it, especially the kids who travel all summer with mom and dad. Find something you enjoy doing (machine shop foreman or teacher) that also fits your away-from-work life (machine shop foreman when I needed the extra bucks, teacher now that I want time with my wife adn kids) and do it.
