/out/ I want to go completely off the grid and be able to sustain myself in the wilderness, but I'm not quite sure where to start or if I have all the required equipment. Can you help me?

i only ask bc ive thought about going and trying this for a bit too and i wanted to see if the internet was as important to you as it was for me. i was talking to a friend and he said you can get satellite internet in places ff the grid, the only problem would be electric. maybe a generator would help there

That is something that has gone through my mind as well, but the problem with a generator is that gas may not be easy to come by, unlike sunlight, so that's why I thought solar panels would work well

i dont know how woodsy you are op but id definably look into survival skills before gathering supplies, ive been told that state parks and other conservation areas offer survival and hiking classes, they wold show you how to forge and what not to eat how to purify water stuff like that. Also if youre looking for a place to head off to there is the mark twain national forest here in misorui and im pretty sure youre allowed to stay in there for as long as you want so long as you move campsite ever few weeks unfortunately setting up a cabin or a permanent structure wouldn't be cool

The truth is that unless you're in an area with cell coverage, getting internet will be pretty expensive. If you want to find out how important internet is for you, just go camping for a few weeks. Most likely you'd use it to look up reference material on things like generator/engine/truck repair, farming/gardening, medical info, and supply catalogs.

Thanks Anon, I would definitely like to set up a permanent housing, but I would sure check out the state parks and maybe even do like backpacking to use those skills more

yeah thats another reason why it would be so handy. You can learn it all yourself and have off the top of your head knowledge but its still handy to do a quick google search on things

Having operated out of many remote locations, having the internet in a 'do everything' workshop is usually essential. You'd have to build a separate, climate controlled room just to store all the books and manuals you'd need throughout the year(s). Given the lack of skills/experience knocking around this thread, I'd say having at least rudimentary access to the internet would count as setting up for success.

You could digitize it and bring a laptop and then just get people to send you USB keys with the stuff you want. There's also the survivalists digital HF HAM network, though that's mostly for email. Free, though.

I don't think anyone would mind anyone setting up a residence in public land (that isn't designated a preserve or area of study) provided you go a linear fuckton into that wilderness. It's a long ass haul to go far enough to avoid a line of sight from any roads (at least I would), although there are many more linear fucktons beyond that distance of no roads

honestly the fact that your question was so open ended means you have no idea what you're doing. I would reccomend going on some extended hikes/camping trips at least a week long.

If you can camp/hike the AT for a week at a time, you basically know what you'd need.

As far as actual homesteading goes it totally depends on your ability to invest. ie, how much land can you buy? solar panels or no? livestock or now? farming or nor? etc....

get more experience first.

i have grown up in a rural area. hunting, fishing, getting dirty, camping for a week or 2... and ill tell you its gona be harder than you think.

to start off. go camping. learn how to make a fire and cook on it. learn how to catch fish and small game and clean it to cook... all of this can easily be learned on youtube. just remember watching it on youtube in a 10 min video and spending a whole week doing it yourself is different.

most importantly youll have to have ingenuity. just today me and my GF were out in the woods. we took chicken legs along for lunch but didnt have any way to cook them. we took 2 short sticks, clamped the small end of the legs between the sticks and tied it together with vines. then just held them over the fire like a marshmellow. took like 30 mins to cook but we ate lunch.

but another problem is what land are you going to live on?? if you buy your own land its cona cost alot of start up money, and kinda defeat the purpose... a few places that come to mind would be west virginia, midstate newyork, somewhere in the northwest?? but even these places have people nearby and youll never know if you are trespassing on land or not.

this is a personal goal of me and my GF someday, but hew family owns land over in laos. the exchange rate from usd to kip is like 800% so if you could save up just a few thousand $ here in the states and move over to a small poor country like that and live in a village you would be pretty good off, and live a primitive lifestyle at the same time :D

I have gathered that I really should go out and get more pratice than what I have, rather than be out there with little experience and die.

Something that I was thinking about doing is what this guy did in the documentary >>308832 posted, and buying a cheap lot in the woods and work on the property to be able to live on it.
But for now work on skills then get more tools and things for livig on my own.

aah, its kinda tough to get away from civilation there. i worked in philly before. if you really love nature and want to get a taste of being out doors i would recommend going to the woodland valley campground in the catskill forest. its about a 4 hour drive but totally worth it if you really appreciate nature and want to get out. woodland campground would be a good first time option because its park ranger supervised campground, they have facility's like showers and firepits, but its about 1 hour from the nearest walmart. i live on the complete other side of Pa and im planing a trip there later this year, its like an 8 hour drive for me...

This is so much more complicated than you think. Learning the paperwork to do it the "right" way is more difficult than the surviving aspect of it in my opinion

pic semi related, an abandoned asylum hospital about an hour south of the catskills. if you could look left just a few degrees in that pic you could see the same mountians as in my bike pic i posted earlier

If you can take flat landscape, hot in summer, cold in winter, and dry all year long... land in the southern parts of the Texas panhandle plains is going for $500 to $600 per acre. Good aquifer here, just have to have a well around 120 to 150 feet deep.

Oh, and wind. Sustained winds of over 40 mph and gusts over 60 for the last couple of days.

You should really understand that you will need human interaction in order to stay sane. Unless you're a sociopath, then you'll probably be fine. If I were to live innawoods I'd do it close enough to a city so i could go grab supplies when needed and maybe organize some way to exchange something I was doing in the woods for money IE-fishing or making art. Money makes this world go round man. Hard to live without it, even in the woods. you can't build everything from scratch, you'll still need nails and a hammer purchased from somewhere! I'd also seriously consider only doing it for a short period. 3 weeks is what I think I could stand before I grow bored and start missing my friends and family. Again, living innawoods for long periods of time is only suitable for sociopaths or hermits. if you don't much care for human interaction then it might be a good path for you. That's why they tend to put mental health institutes innawoods.

How come on may 1st all the insects decide to come out at once? They weren't here yesterday. Carpenter ants have infested my firewood pile overnight (actually, the entire 10 acre property is covered, like an ant ocean), and all the bees, wasp, hornets and butterflies suddenly decided to come at the same time. Same with the flies and silverfish.

Protip you dont need to live in the wilderness to be off grid, just buy a house in some area with very low population density (usually cheap) and a decent piece of arable land
chillax growing veggies/animals for personal use, bonus point for growing flax/hemp for clothing.

Good luck with stuff like health insurance and shit like that.
