Ideally, a sealed steel can will keep fuel the longest. I try to use the fuel in my plastic cans <6mo, but I've never had a problem with it either. You'd probably be fine with a Rotopax jug.
Buy decent fuel to begin with. Non-ethanol lasts longer than ethanol blends, because the ethanol content attracts and bonds to water. Water doesn't burn.
IMO unless it's a high-performance motor you're running at the upper limit of the fuel through it to begin with, you shouldn't have a problem even using year-old fuel. I run good fuel through my sled, and I've had it det at lower elevations with 91E10 fuel in it. Throw some fresh 91E0 and it runs fine.
The bike I usually run 91E0 through, but it'll run on 85E10. I do have to jet it up a bit before it runs nicely on that, and I'd recommend bringing some additional jets.
Truck doesn't give a shit, it's my fuel disposal. I'll even throw a little bit of premix in there with a mostly-full tank just to burn that fuel off, then start with fresh stuff the next season.
