I got mine over winter and have camped with it thrice already! it's fantastic. after setting it up once or twice innabush you really quick and efficient with it. it's the best.

as you would know it comes with a fitted tarp (for the top or bottom) but honestly i would recommend buying an additional fitted tarp. that way you can put one on top and on bottom and be completely encapsulated against weather, without having to rig a big tarp shelter over the thing (that ain't my style). both tarps will fit easily in the compression sack with the hammock so don't worry about it adding bulk.

yeah whatever floats ya goat. i've never been one to rig up a large tarp, i like to keep the operation small and easy. although it can get a bit stuffy in full coccoon mode, which you don't get with an external tarp. it's great against wind though!

The brass pan is an antique. You would fill it with hot coals from the fire and close it and then use it similar to a hot water bottle. The tree is just decoration.

With this new set-up replacing my hammock (And related gear) I'm at 5.7kg (Or 6.5kg with my axe).

I'm pretty happy with that. Just throw in spare clothes and consumables and I'm good to go.

That hipbelt is definetly not as sturdy as the one on my aether 70, but I just did 22 miles last weekend with that flapbelt, and it seemed to be just fine...

I've found hammocks to be way less cumbersome and way lighter than a tent setup, especially in the summer, but with my polkadot sleeping bag pictured in the compression sack discussion, paired with a thermarest, I've been comfy at +15F in an eno hammock without rainfly

The sleeping pad weighs in at 620g which is already lighter than the hammock. Cut out the 900g underquilt and I'm saving well over a kilogram now. I'm not taking a tent, I'm going to try using just a tarp.

This is base pack weight mind! I carry 3L of water, which is 3kg, and then for a weekend I wouldn't be surprised if I hit 10kg total weight before the axe.

eh I guess if you're just gonna sleep on the ground out in the open then ok. although in that case i'd still think just the hammock in the open would require less bulk and weight. if you're bringing a sleeping bag regardless, you won't need mosi nets/underblankets during most of camping season

I appreciate the suggestions. This will be my sixth season in the same areas and those items can stay. Though, I agree with replacing items with things I feel are more appropriate in the FAK. I haven't had much time to look at everything individually, but from first glance, there are a few things that are absolute garbage (scissors, anything made of metal...) and some things that are useful and good quality (primarily the gauze and bandages. I'll be adding a few stainless tools, a small dress kit if a few stitches are needed, to start.

The five fingers are outstanding on the granite stones because the soles are sipped. For light use, they are great.

Different guy here, but My answer to that would be that it throws off weight distribution and causes the load to be oddly shaped. Also, a 60-70 lite pack should be able to hold a compressed sleeping bag and change of clothes, and possibly even your tent/hammock, along with all the other supplies you would need for a good weeklong outing.

Personal preference I suppose. Most 3-season sleeping bags do not weigh more than 2.5lbs. If weight distribution is a problem then attach it at the top flap, enclosure and such that your head is not hindered, or attach below and out from your ass/legs.

you see that lensie thing on one side an the string on the other one? you fold it close and look into the lense, you'll see the compass if you lift slightly your eye you will see what the compass is aligned with

This way you can find what direction is a certain notable point relative to two position and see on a map where it is

Or you can find your position by aiming at two different points if you know where they are on the map

My latest outdoor purchase was a pair of Hi Tec Altitude Vs (I thought hi-tec, fuck that, but the reviews for the IVs were great and they're not much more expensive than the cloth trail shoes I burn through).

I'd pay more for good boots but I don't know what the good ones are these days (I'm replacing some ancient and excellent Raichles), and I needed new boots right then for spring thaw and spring rain. So far so good.

It is a GSI Compact Scrapper. It's used to clean dishes and such. One end is a hard rubber the other soft. Makes cleaning a lot easier.
