So I'm moving away from car camping, and into the relm of backpacking. I want to shed some weight and one of the obvious places is to ditch a tent in favor of a tarp. Where I live, the mosquitoes are insane. So how do you keep bugs out of this thing?

If you want to lose weight: Only bring fresh socks and undergarments instead of a full set of clothes. Only bring a small amount of food in, scavenge or trap the rest. Buy a lighter knife, lighter jacket, lighter everything.

I regularly weekend camp, and do 5-7 day trips on ~12lbs. If I didn't bring my .22 pistol, it'd be closer to 10, but I gotta eat.

Dude, decent backpacking tents weigh less than any make-shift shit you can come up with. Backpacking tents are specifically made to be as light as possible to do exactly what you're looking for, as best as is possible.

Guess what is better for lightweight backpacking tents:
A) Lightweight backpacking tents invented specifically to function as lightweight backpacking tents
B) Something else

Lightweight backpacking tents are the best lightweight backpacking tents. No guy--there simply aren't better alternatives out there. Because people who like backpacking, a lot, worked REALLY HARD, to deliver the best product that is available. You can't make-shift a better one.

Pretty much this. After you do a few trips you come to that realization that you can either:
A) grab the absolute lightest and most minimalist gear possible.
Or
B) put up with maybe 2-3lb difference at most, not get raped by bugs, and get a good night's sleep and not feel like shit the next day on trail.

There are plenty of good lightweight tents out there, and several made just for backpacking. If your gear selection is smart and you aren't stingy on the gear that really counts (boots,pack,tent,bag,pad) it should last you quite a long time if you take care of it.

I bought a light weight tent a while back for short bike packing trips with the intent of cutting the fly out to make it a basic tarp with bathtub.

Everytime I go to cut the fly out I'm thinking is it really going to make that much difference in weight/pack size and just leave it in.

Last night I was packing to go for a quick one nighter and my 35l backpack is crammed full before taking any food, water or extra clothes.

I'd not worry too much about the tent unless you have a overly large/heavy one. My tent rolls up to about the size of a pair of trousers and weighs 1.2kg so not really worth making smaller

Seems strange sacking off the fly and groundsheet to take a bivvy which is probably around the same size on a small tent?

I've heard that a good way to get around this is to dig a trench around the bottom of the tarp to direct the water around you rather than through you.

When I use a tarp I take the inner tent from a shit old cheap-ass one man tent with me. That provides floor and bug netting. The setup isn't really much lighter than if I just took the whole one man tent, BUT it's roomier and more versatile.

So what OP may or may not want to go with a tarp would be a bathtub groundsheet with bug netting. When combined with a tarp, that's pretty much a tent though.

They're right about backpacking tents btw. Shit like higher end tents and the tarptent stuff is about as efficient a shelter as shelters can get. Expensive though.

With a tarp however, you do get versatility, that nice open 'sleeping in nature' feel, and potentially a lot more space, depending how it's pitched. And it's MUCH cheaper. My 550g tarp was £45, my 350g Bivy bag was £40. Try getting a sub 1kg tent for less than that, I dare ya.

Cheap light and bug free... Worth a thought if you fancy a bit of a project.

A trangia stove and pots, a down sleeping bag, waterproof bivvy, inflatable sleeping mat (not a self inflating foam one but a air one you inflate with your mouth) also a small peice of foam sleeping mat for my dog to sleep on. This pretty much fills my 35lt backpack 3/4 full without food or water and extra clothes!
I'm pretty sure most people get their pack size down to 30lt for short over nights wtf am I doing wrong?

Hmmmmmm...I didn't really explain but I'm hoping to get out on a bike packing trip so maybe I need to put my sleeping bag in a dry bag on my bars and possibly put the bivvy in there too.
Problem in the uk is its t-shirt weather during the day and can be pretty chilly at night, also as mentioned its likly to piss it down at some stage so waterproofs are needed to be packed along with dry clothes. Always seems like a lot to carry. Maybe I can sleep clothed in the bivvy and lose the sleeping bag?

I pack everything I need for 10 days (refill water only) in my 46L bag as long as the weather wont go under 7c at night, and I still got some headroom!

How do you manage to fill an entire 30L bag for only one night?

Weight matters substantially less on a bike compared with on foot. In the UK you're not going to climb any huge mountains, so it matters even less.

For sustained touring (1 week or more) I bring ~18-23 kg of gear. Carrying a few extra litres of water is no big deal if the situation calls for it.

Agreed with the alpkit stuff. I have the Hunka bivvy and it's great for the price, also dry bags, the inflatable mat and delta tent by them. Looking at buying one of their gas stoves when they come back in stock too along with a titanium mug and saddle bag.
The kelp colour kit is great for blending in when free camping, unfortunatly both my bivvy (blue) and tent (red) are in bright colours as they'd sold out of all the kelp ones. Think I might by one of their tarps too.

Yep, kelp everything here lol.

Their tarps are pretty dam fantastic for the money, you won't be disappointed if you do get one. I gots the rig 7, prefect size for most stuff.

Their gourdon drybackpack goes pretty much everywhrere with me too.

I'm starting to sound like I' work for their marketing department here, sorry.

I just wish they could sort out the stock situation a little. I wanted one of the sleeping bags but I waited a long-ass time, eventually giving up and going elsewhere. That stock checker page of theirs got quite a workout from me.

What's that tent like?

I look like I'm sponsored by them when I go out. I also have their sleeping bag it's really snug, I have a gourdon too great bag and really cheap. Their head lamps are good too for £12.
The tent is ok. I got it cheap as it was a prototype and they didn't really work out that well due to the fly being a bit baggy and apparently in high winds and rain the fly touches the outer and gets wet. I've not really had this problem as I've been lucky with the weather so far. I bought the tent with the idea of just using the outer, but it's much better than I thought so take the fly too.

Ahh nice... I remember seeing that when it was on offer, didn't know quite why though. Sounds like it does what you need it to though eh.

I too have a head torch, it's the only thing I've had a problem with. It's the one with the batteries at the back, and one of the power wires fell off its solder thing within a few days. I soldered it back on but it can act strange every so often. Some contact shit in the battery box I suspect.

The whole coast down here is cracking, well worth a trip. You can walk the full coastal path from mine head to Poole harbour. I'd love to do that at some point. North Devon and Cornwall, South Cornwall and Devon and Dorset. Be great to take a light pack and stop in a pub each night for drinks and grub then pitch up on the coastal path for the night and set off at sunrise. Might see if I can do a good section this summer if I have a break in work for a week or so.

Well not that fucked up but if your trying to save weight to conserve energy then digging up the ground around your tarp kinda defeats the whole point. I'd rather carry a bathtub ground than start digging up the ground LNT and all
